A group leaves earth to set up thier own colony. On board is a computer programer who creates a virtual world using a program called Bright Illimiter. All the character share in that world. The ship encouters an ice moon with a alien space craft at the center. The onboard computer links to the Bright Illimiter virtual world.

Red seven- Alien Robot
Computer programer has gay lovers throughout book.
Strong male lead character that the programer has a crush on.

I hope someone remembers. The bright Illimitor is a specific enough detail that it doesn't show up in google searches but hopefully enough to stick in someone's head.

Maybe Iris by William Barton and Michael Capobianco. I read it, but long enough ago that I don't remember a lot. I don't recall the "Bright Illimitor", but right at the beginning we have: "Achmet Aziz el-Tabari, who called himself Demogorgon the Illimitor Artist..." Has an ice moon with alien spacecraft on the surface, and a gas giant (the Iris of the title) with a large spacecraft at its center. Here's a review.
