SEPTEMBER READ - NO SPOILERS - Nine Princes in Amber

I read Nine Princes in Amber by Roger Zelazny many, many, many (lots of manys) years ago. I basically remember the plot, somewhat. Maybe.

I've already got it loaded up on my Nook, so I'll be ready to go come September.

Ooooh, I love Zelazny so much. I should get back to Amber, although I find that I prefer Lord of Light. I might get in on this one.

I got the audio for almost nothing, so will listen to it this time. I've read it many times as well.

Ooooh, love it. I have The Great Book of Amber so I never remember where the "books" end, but the first, say, 2-3 books are my favorite.

I have posted several times that at least the first book or so in the Amber series would make a great movie. Special effects have evolved enough I would think to bring it off economically perhaps? The books at the end of the series did not make as good an impression to me.

Actually, I think that Amber, like a lot of other larger series, would be really well served as a TV miniseries (or actual seasonal series). Regardless of one's opinion of HBO and of A Song of Ice and Fire, it's easy to see that Game of Thrones is well-designed, very high quality, and popular.

Between that and re-booted popular series like Dr Who, I really hope we can get more good series on TV for people to see. Amber would be an excellent fit for that, in my opinion.

I've read the first five Amber books, and recently acquired the Great Book with all 10. I remember liking the concept of the trumps and the linked worlds, but wasn't keen on any of the characters. I'll try to fit in a reread to refresh my memories.

Will probably be re-reading it, as I own it, loved it and haven't re-read it for quite a while :)

I loved the first few, but they rapidly went downhill from there. It felt like he was just pounding out another Amber book to keep his publishers happy.

I read this a long, long LONG time ago - still in high school. The book made a huge impression, and the details of it are still amazingly clear. I still own signed hardbacks of the early five in the series, and most of Zelazny's other work, too.

I know a revisit to his other works will be immensely rewarding, there was so much in them.

Am almost afraid to give this one a revisit...if the suck fairy got it, it would be AWFUL.

Still a huge enthusiast of Zelazny's work. What an original mind - and that trait - did you know he put ONE BAD PUN in every single book (at least, but there was always ONE that was a particular groaner.....'the fit hit the shan' was one of them, from another story.

I once helped annotate a compendium of all of Zelazny's short fiction, and there were PILES AND PILES of stories published in old pulps - the man had an extremely lively mind.

I've got a couple post cards (still saved) from him, written in response to (yeah, high school) fan mail. What a lovely person, and very very intense, if you ever had the opportunity to meet him. Strikingly intelligent, but very quiet and shy - you had to approach him to have any sort of conversation. I really miss having new works by him, since he passed on.

I've loved this one for many years, and still re-read it occasionally. Something about his going from remembering nothing to finding his way in Amber really grabs me. I liked all of the Amber books, but the Corwin ones will always be my favorites.

(13) @JannyWurts, I have reread The Chronicles of Amber (first five stories) within the last few years, and am happy to report that the Suck Fairy did not visit me!

I've got Nine Princes in Amber in September TIOLI 1 if anyone else is doing TIOLI.

The amber books were and are a huge favorite of mine from when I was in high school. I decided to get the audio version for a reread/listen and am loving it as much as I remembered. I'm both enjoying it and recalling the sense of wonder from my first time reading it.
