A writer allowed her dogs to roam freely in their smallish town (US Northeast. Massachusetts? Connecticut?) and wrote about how they interacted as a pack with each other and their environment. I read this book around 2002 and believe it was a recent publication. I think it was a hardback; it had a maroon cover. Thanks for any help.

Maybe The Hidden Life of Dogs? It looks like it published about 10 years earlier than you read it, but I see some editions have a maroon cover.

That's it! Thanks so much. This group just amazes me.
