It is not a western but horses are used as transportation. The girls father is the judge. Girl was born normal but got a fever before she would have started school. I see some of this book as negligence and neglect on the parents part as she never sees the DR after that illness, she also roams the forests and fields without supervision, she was also hidden from visitors. The girl is pregnant. A mean woman is hired to look after the girl, but the husband catches the woman abusing the girl and fires her.
After the baby is born the husband sends her to a deaf school.
