Terrible subject line for this book, it's hard to sum up. I remember reading this paperback maybe late 80s early 90s. First person POV narrator, a woman watches a series of new neighbors moving into a brand new house built by a young architect. Each time something terrible or some misfortune happens to ruin their lives. One family's daughter ends up pregnant and she and boyfriend quit plans for college. A woman in another family goes insane, etc. I think there was a death in there somewhere, too. Near the end of the story, the woman narrator realizes it's not that the house is evil--it is--but that the genesis of the evil is in the architect himself. Everything he's built has had something terrible attached to it. The narrator and husband decide to kill him, then their pets end up dead, and at the end they are waiting for the nameless evil to come and take revenge.

Sorry for the rambling, it really is very hard to make this coherent. There were 3 almost separate stories within this overarching plot as the woman watches the new families move into the house, then the misfortune in whatever form, the moving out, then the next family enters. It was a used book; think I borrowed it from someone. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Could it be "The House Next Door" by Anne Rivers Siddons? There is another one that I am thinking of, will post as soon as I remember what it is called...
