I am looking for a book I read in middle school. I thought the title was something to do with an electric pushcart, but extensive keyword searches have come up empty... anyhow, here's what I can remember about the book/story:
A man who works for the military takes his child (I think it was a girl) to work with him one day and they go into an underground bunker to check that it is still operational (or something like that). The bunker is huge, meant to hold whole populations of people during a war/fallout, and has a lot of amenities like a swimming pool, library, extensive food and supply stores, etc.; it is fully stocked to support a small community of people for several years. When they try to leave the bunker they discover that the earth is covered in a thin layer of dust that they first take to be snow, then realize that a war had overtaken the world while they were underground and it is really a nuclear winter, and so they remain in the bunker. They end up leaving the bunker after a time (Years? Months?) and they take with them an electric, battery operated pushcart to hold all of their supplies and radio while they search for other survivors. I think the end of the book had them finally establishing radio contact with other people and going out in search of them.
I have found several other similar books/stories but none that are the book I remember reading and most of them are about whole groups and communities of survivors; in this book, the father and child are the only two people that live in the bunker, there is no one else.
Although they have similar themes and share a few similar details, it is NOT 'Triumph' by Philip Wylie.
Does anyone know what book this is and/or who wrote it?

Hey! I think "Strange Tomorrow" might just be it! I have ordered it through my library account and I will report back to let you all know if it is indeed the right book. If not, then I guess the search continues!

Yes! I believe 'Strange Tomorrow' is the book I have been looking for all these years. I had a few minor plot details wrong, but it's been almost 30 years since I read this book. I must have read this story when it was brand new, as the copyright is 1985! Cool!
Thank you everyone for your help!!!
