I'm fairly sure this is a Harlan Ellison story, but can't find it in the couple collections I have easily at hand. (MAYBE I'll get some shelves up one day and get all my books out of the boxes in the closet.)

In the story, a man walks into a bookstore where there are people standing around "reading" books that describe the "greatest moment" of their lives. It then goes on to describe how he reacts to discovering his.

Would be grateful for the title and collection, would be really grateful for a link if it's online somewhere that anyone could read it.

off topic -

Your title sounds like the first line of a good joke.

yeah it does, doesn't it? :p

I'm hoping someone comes up with the title. Doing a search with Harlan and book store in it just gets me a LOT of links about how he'd write stories in book stores.

I already knew all about that! Hell, I have an autographed copy of one he did in NC back in '86 that a friend gave me.

Shelf Life has Ellison's The Cheese Stands Alone, which is also in Stalking the Nightmare. The synopsis here: http://harlanellison.com/review/stalking.htm#cheese makes it sound like the one you're looking for, rastaphrog.

Great! Now you can write the rest of the joke.   :-)
