cyderry - Chèli's efforts to ROOT

So I'm here to READ OUR OWN TOMES (ROOT) - those that I already own!

2012 I set a goal of 80 (Nook books/Net Galley 25, Audio books 30, and ARDs 25). I finished with 95 (Nook books/Net Galley 37, Audio books 30, and ARDs 28). But again, I'd added more than 150. Net gain 55+
So in 2013, I upped my goal to 105. I needed to up my ROOTs in 2013 but instead of digging up more, I fell short of my goal. Maybe I was overly ambitous.
So even though I've been reading my books, my TBRs are still growing. (2013 they actually diminished by 15.)

So after much reflection. I've decided to set my goal in 2014 to 84 - 28 audios, 38 e-books, and 18 ARDs.
Goal:
Nook books/Net Galley 38 - Books off my Nook or NetGalleys downloaded to my Nook, or Books on my Kindle.
Audio books 28 - Books downloaded to my PC/MP3
ARDs 18 - Books that are already sitting on my shelves or ARCs/ERs awarded to me in 2014

For every ROOT successfully cleared in 2013 I put $1 in my book bank so that at the end of the year I have money for new books! I already have my wishlist created so before the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve, I will place my order with Barnes & Noble for my Nook acquisitions and will have additional books to count. The book bank total may be added to if I receive any gift cards for Christmas.

ETA goal changed to 84 to average 7 per month.

Dec 11, 2013, 4:06 am

Interesting. I could never do that. For 99% of new books, sure. But something used, if it's there and something I want, in good condition for the right price... I feel like walking away from it is a horrible decision! heh

When I save an Euro for every book read, I could probably just buy 4 new books. That will not work for me :-(

15cyderry
Dec 11, 2013, 4:16 pm

Last year when I read 95 ROOTs, I was able to buy 12 books. Sorry, that the EURO doesn't trade as well. Maybe try 2 EUROS per book.

The new book is Home of the Braised the newest in the White House Chef series by Julie Hyzy. Of the 200+ series I follow it is one of my favorites, so I had to get it. But it in on my Nook, so no shelf space taken.

And I'm changing my goal to 96 to even it out to an average of 8 a month. This could be tough to stay on target.

37lsh63
Jan 8, 2014, 7:23 pm

Ha, I had a feeling your new book was Home of The Braised. This series is one of my favorites also. You should have seen me yesterday at 5 in the morning wondering why the book wasn't downloading yet.

Suddenly, I am glad I have a category for 'wishlists'. Home of the Braised looks like a fun mystery. I do NOT need to go out and get any MORE books to read (especially after having just consoled myself over a disappointment by visiting the local bookstore's bargain bin), but I could stick it on my wishlist and that will help me remember it when I'm not in full ROOT mode. Nifty.

I hope you enjoy the book!

Merryann - I created my own extra collection called "recommended LT" so I could keep track of all the book bullets I take here that I don't want to buy right away. I use the "comment" field to tell me where I heard about it, so I can go back and check it out if I forget why it's on my list.

I've organized my lists various ways. I have an Ever-Expanding list that contains books I want to read -- whether owned, at the library, or nowhere in sight. I have a lists of owned books located at home or at my husband's office, lists of books available at various libraries, and a Wishlist for those I don't own and that aren't readily available at a library I can access (though I borrow some of those eventually via Inter-Library Loan).

I used to put a note in the comment field as to who recommended books. There are so many books I heard about via multiple sources, that got cumbersome, and sometimes I was just too lazy or forgot to enter the info. But I may go back to doing that -- I'm noticing too many books where I wonder "where did I hear about this? what did they say?"

Well, I'm kind of in a reading funk. After surgery I thought I'd be ready to read a lot but other activities took priority.

My Ladies group (I'm the Director) was running a fundraiser for Special Olympics and there was oodles of preparations that went into it and the lady who was supposed to help me, her daughter had to have surgery (good outcome) but that left me on my own. My sweet husband, stepped in to help, and the event was a success raising $1,720 - $220 more than our goal!

So then when I sat down read the next book for Book Club, I just can't get into it. I'm giving it 2 more tries, and if I can't get to page 60, that's it, I'll have abandon it.

At least I only need one more ROOT this month to stay on pace.
I should be able to do that on the plane, and I'm thinking an audiobook sounds good for the packing process.

29. Pecan Pies and Homicides (2013)
30. Something Old, Something New (2013)
31. Execution Dock (2011)
32. Where'd You Go, Bernadette? (2013)
33. Murderous Glaze (2012)
34. Girl of His Dreams (2010)

I had to abandon the 35th ROOT, The upright Piano Player.
When it got to the point and was going into the character's cancer, it hit to close too home and I couldn't go there. Don't judge the book because I abandoned it.

I've also been cleaning up my collections and decided that since I have SO MANY Freebies for my e-readers and that I probably will never read them unless there really is a WWBF, I've removed them from my TBRs - 120 ROOTs done in an afternoon!

I've also designated nearly 100 TBRs for next year's series reads.

I'm telling myself that this makes up for the fact that I probably won't reach my goal this year of 84 ROOTs. I have 12 more to go and three books that I've selected to read during the remainder of the year are a bunch of fatties - The Pillars of the Earth, Emerald Atlas, and The Bully Pulpit. If I could count them as multiple books, I'd be set.
