All I remember is a character named "Jil!" (she replaced the second "L" with an exclamation point because she wanted more excitement in her life). I think the cover had a picture of a boy wearing a full body cast (ala a mummy) while drinking a soda through a straw.

I know it's not much to go on. Thanks for the help!

Oh, goodness, this was a while ago. I was probably in elementary or middle school, but it wasn't a "kids" book. I want to say it was more YA.

Okay, when were you in elementary or middle school? We don't know you, so saying "the mid-90s" or "about five years ago" is more helpful than telling us how old you were at the time.

Could be Paula Danziger's Matthew Martin books. Matthew's female friend's name is Jil!. The cover of the second book, Make Like a Tree and Leave (1990), shows one of Matthew's friends being wrapped in plaster gauze. The other three books are Everyone Else's Parents Said Yes (1989), Earth to Matthew (1991), and Not for a Billion Gazillion Dollars (1992).

I knew the description sounded familiar! I just grabbed an old box of my juvenile books from my parents and Make Like a Tree and Leave was in it! I added it to LT less than two weeks ago and still couldn't place the vague memory ...
