Here we go again... I am going to try for 156 (or 3 books a week) this year. I read 171 last year, but I was on sabbatical for part of the year so that upped the reading time significantly.

I am also keeping track by category at in the 2014 Category challenge at: www.librarything.com/topic/172142

I do not have a lot to say about the Museum of Extraordinary Things, except that it seems to me that Alice Hoffman is trying to apply her magic realism to a historical subject with facts and that it works sometimes and sometimes not. Not my favorite Alice Hoffman or historical fiction.

What We Have Lost Is Nothing would have been an interesting story and quick read about the consequences of burglary in an inner ring suburb, except that I live in that suburb (Oak Park) and in that neighborhood (east side bordering on Chicago). First, she got the geography all wrong with streets intersecting that are parallel and placing the whole neighborhood in the wrong place which was annoying to me, but also impacts the story. Second, the events of the story, day time burglary and home invasion, are very real things that happen in my neighborhood and are very complex events to respond to because of Oak Park's commitment to racial and economic diversity. We are not perfect, but we are trying. The resolution of the story did not make sense and was pretty unrealistic and there could have been a lot more character development.

I agree with you about the Hoffman. It just fell a bit flat for me. The placement of the historical events felt stilted and didn't ring true within the story.

I did like the Hoffman more than you though. I understand how annoying it is when you read about an area with which you are familiar and the author doesn't get it right. When the reader knows the subject better than the author it can never end happily.
