Have any of you read Hilary Mantel's A place of greater safety? It's one of my favorite historical novels. She perfectly captures the feeling of utter contingency among the Jacobins, the sense that things could come crashing down at any moment. She also beautifully and wittily describes the intimate relationships among Danton, Robespierre, and Camille Desmoulins. This little known work is really terrific!

I am so excited to read this post. I just read the Josephine B. books by Sandra Gulland- I enjoyed them, but wanted more history! I read about this book and just ordered it. I have been waiting for it to arrive every day!

Do you have any other recommendations for this time period?

This is complete BSP (Blatant self-Promotion), but try my Aristide Ravel mystery series, set before and during the French Revolution:

Game of Patience (set 1796)
A Treasury of Regrets (set 1797)
The Cavalier of the Apocalypse (not yet listed at LT--in bookstores July 2009, set 1786)
...and I'm working on the next one!
