Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader has to be one of my favorite reads. She writes about how she reads and the books she reads. There are certain behaviors that mimic mine and that made me feel such a great connection to the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to read.

Absolutely!!! Anne is my favorite author. I pre-ordered her latest book, At Large and At Small : Familliar Essays by Anne Fadiman, got it a few days before its release date, and due to circumstances beyond my control, haven't finished it yet. It's been a really tough month for me... but what I have read in it is true to her style. Use the LT Search feature with just her last name and you'll find lots of comments about her.
My wife and I were in Alaska during the last week of June. In Ketichkan, I found a FE copy of her first book - The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down : A Hmong child, her American doctors, and the collision of two cultures, and it was in pristine condition. When we arrived back in Seattle, I found an autographed FE of At Large and At Small at Elliot Bay, so now I've got 2 copies, one of which I will simply give to someone.
I also have her 3rd book, Rereadings : Seventeen Writers Revisit Books They Love. The essays are all written by other authors, but none of them are nearly as interesting or well written as her introduction to the book.

I read Ex Libris last month and loved it. I've now added At Large and At Small: Familiar Essays to my wish list.

At Large and At Small is a nice collection. Its less focused on a single topic, so you will probably find yourself drawn to some essays more than others, but I found that overall it was more Fadiman magic. I am such a fangirl for her writing.

I've only recently discovered anne fadiman, I read ex libris but I thought it was fantastic, especially the chapter 'never do that to a book' myself and my partner are very much at opposite ends of the spectrum anne mentions! I'm going to have to get some of her other books mentioned here.
I bought / read ex libris at the same time as used and rare ... has anyone else read that one? another great admission of book-aholicism and some very familiar characters in there from bookshops I've visited.

Oddly enough, I also bought Ex Libris and Used and Rare at the same time, and read them serially. Both are excellent books, but I really prefer the way Anne Fadiman's style of writing.
