Hi, my name is Abigail, and this is my first time joining the 75ers group. I am 18, and am loving being a part of this group. I don't really have a reading plan, I usually just read whatever catches my eye. I do love reading YA, paranormal, graphic novels, fantasy, historical fiction, and poetry. I will probably only review those books which I think are special or that I love. Although this is a book group, I take an immense interest in talking about the artwork of books and how the books compare to the movies and tv shows.

Well, it's Monday. Miserable Monday. Positively the worst day of the week. For me, I will spend the day doing schoolwork, reading, and then I might find time to do a bit of art. I am excited about starting Wuthering Heights this week. I have been waiting to read it for some time. I will be on later to give an account of what happened while by best friend was staying with us, and to post some pics. Happy last day of March everyone!

This is my best friend Toni and me. She is a lot taller than she used to be, which was surprising, but other than that she was exactly as I remembered her. We all had a fabulous time while she was here. We talked a lot, played video games, and we all watched Catching Fire together which was really fun because Toni and her mom hadn't seen it yet. They also taught us how to play a very fun card game called Kemps. I loved seeing her again, and it was hard to say good bye. We do have a promise that they will stay with us again, and for a longer period, over the summer. This summer can't come fast enough. She is truly family to us.

Good Morning everyone! It's almost afternoon, but oh well. Not much planned here today. My mum took two of the dogs to get groomed this morning, so the place is a bit less crazy than usual. Dan is unfortunately feeling under the weather and has staked claim to the sofa in the living room. As for me, I will be starting the audiobook of Wuthering Heights, starting a new sketchbook (as I just finished sketchbook #4 last night), doing some work out on the deck (hopefully with my mum to keep me company), and reading. I am reading Harry Potter Page to Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey which is absolutely fascinating! I love everything about it. It's a good thing that my family loves Harry Potter as much as I do, or else they probably would have been annoyed by now at all the Harry Potter movie facts I keep telling all of them. As it is, they love hearing them, and fortunately for me, they always spark off a conversation about Harry Potter. This is looking like it is to be a very good week.

Morning! This time it really is morning. Unfortunately, Dan is still feeling under the weather. We all knew he was sick when he hardly ate anything the other day. Dan is an extreme lover of food, especially bacon, and it is always startling when I don't see him eating. Luckily, he seemed to feel slightly better last night, so I hope he will feel better as the day progresses. Rae and I did spend some time in the pool yesterday, and with a bit of luck we will be able to do the same today. I need to update my reading here, and then I might post some art picks. Hope everyone is having a good day!

Rating: 3 stars

This GN is about a young girl (Soah) who is sacrificed to the water god in the hopes that it will bring much needed rain to their village. Upon arriving in the God's lands, she is saved by the water god (Habaek) and brought to his kingdom as his wife. She is surprised to find that Habaek, the feared water god, is only a small child. She is caught in a world she knows nothing of, with only her senses to tell her what is real and what is false.

These books are my guilty pleasure books. The storyline is complicated with the reader being completely confused as to what is going on in the first few books. Soah is not the brightest, but she has courage, and she is willing to fight for what she wants. There is not much of a storyline, but the artwork is amazing. It is beautiful to look at, and it is the main reason I read these books. The mythology is also interesting to learn about.

I like that artwork in Bride of the Water God, too, Abby. Congrats on the great-looking thread. Lovely photo of you and your pal Toni. I'm glad you're going to get a longer visit in the summer.

I don't know whether you'd like it, but Mark and I have been impressed by the new Saga gn series by Brian K. Vaughan, which is sci-fi-y and well done. The third volume just came out, so I'm going to track that down.

Paul I'm honored! Thank you, I hope your weekend is lovely too. I was happy to hear that you got a new driver, maybe you can get some reading done now. Unfortunately I had to return both books as they were requested by someone else, and haven't gotten them back. It could take months to get my hands on them again, but I will hope for the best. >61 ursula: I know! It's been happening so much to me lately that I've stopped requesting books. I'm just working my way through my own library. It might be a good thing as I have a lot of books still to read. Game of Thrones is one of the books I'm most looking forward to reading this year! Everyone has such high praise for it. Sorry that happened to you.

I also read quite a bit of shakespeare, and a lot of people my age find that strange and sometimes horrifying too, but I like what I like. I cannot promise that this will be a poetry free zone, sorry Richard. I like to mix a bit of everything on my thread.

Happy Saturday Everyone! All I have planned this weekend, as it is to rain, is reading. It should be glorious and relaxing. I do have somewhat of a funny story to tell though. Last night my dad and my older brother went out to run some errands and they decided to stop at pets mart before they came home. Now, my father, although he won't admit it, is in love with Mercy. He has already come home several times from work with a new cat tree or some new toy or other. I don't know who he thinks he's fooling. Last night I went out to help the boys unload the van and to my great astonishment I saw that they had bought the tallest cat tree I had ever seen. This thing is huge. It took up from the drivers seat to the trunk door, and we own a mini van. If this is not enough of a statement, let me just say that it is taller than I am. My dad was so proud of what he had bought; he had the brightest smile on his face. When he walked in the door he immediately had Mercy's attention. She knew that it was for her, and to my dad's great delight she spent the rest of the evening playing on it. I am sure she will spend the majority of her day on it today as well. I will post some pics of it later.

Oh, a giant cat tree! I want to get one for our cat, but we haven't found one that's affordable just yet.

Barnum is ADORABLE in the above photo... just like a little sausage, all curled around himself! GAH I just want to smoosh my face in his face... LOL...

>82 norabelle414: I'm sorry to hear that. I'm pretty sure my dad could be pleased with any cat tree, he just likes giving Mercy things. I think it would be harder to find one for a bigger cat; Mercy's so tiny that she can use anything. I do hope you find one that is the right size.

>83 lkernagh: that is very true! She spent most of her day on it yesterday.

>84 richardderus: thank you. It was mostly luck, I just walked out and he was in the perfect spot with just the right amount of lighting. As I was too lazy to write a review, I decided to post some artwork instead. Here is something I did recently. The first pic is a piece that I never finished from about 2 years ago. The Second one is a drawing I did recently off of the old one. My mum says that she likes the eyes of the first one better. I did the second one in a different style just for fun. Neither of them were supposed to be realistic (I don't really do much realistic), they were just me playing around with looser lines and density of lines. It was fun to redo an old piece.

Apr 14, 2014, 10:06 pm

Nice artwork, Abby! Have to agree with Mamie/mom. I like the overall look of the second piece, but the eyes in the first one are striking! I'd have to vote for that one just on eyes alone!

It's raining today. But instead of being gloomy I am going to take today to get a lot of work done. I'm hoping to get all of my schoolwork for the week done today so that I can just relax the rest of the time. I will try to pry my eyes away from mangareader so that I can get some serious art done. Next time I post art I will try to do something that's colored. I've been playing around with markers, but I'm not very good at them yet. I used only colored pencils for years, so branching out into different mediums has been tough to get used to. Still, I want to be a better overall artist.

Ok, so Mark got me thinking about old movies. I am a big old movie lover, as is most of my family. Here's the question of the day: What is one of your favorite old movies and why? Any movie and any reason goes.

As for me....one of my top 10 favorite old movies is Breakfast at Tiffany's. I love Audrey Hepburn (as much as I love Humphrey Bogart & Cary Grant) and I find this movie Charming. I first watched it with my mum, who was the one that created my love for old movies. It's funny and cute and I love the scene where she lights the woman's hat on fire with her cigarette. It is one of my deepest wishes to eventually have a huge black and white framed photo of Audrey Hepburn starring in this movie.

As you know, I love The Big Sleep and Notorious and Casablanca and... They just don't make movies like that anymore. I think the reason that I love those old movies is that the dialogue is so smart. And there is a plot.

Some Like it Hot is a gem, and I think we have a copy of it around here somewhere...

Hi Abigail, I see you read quite a bit of Manga (and Mahnwa). I do (or did) too, though more of Action/Comedy/Sports/Slice of Life; so while I recognise a few titles, I am afraid I haven't read any of those. I don't log my manga or mahnwa reads here at LT though, they are maintained in an excel sheet.

If you love Audrey Hepburn, you must have watched My Fair Lady too, that one is one of my all time favourites; I liked Breakfast at Tiffany's too, but it probably wouldn't feature in my top 50 movies.

One of the best things about LT 75ers is that we can disagree on significant ( or less significant) matters, and just carry on.

I have never seen Casablanca... hard to believe huh? Especially since I really love old movies. I have started watching it a time or two.. and just sort of wandered off mentally. I know it is popular around these parts and that is one of those things we might disagree on.

:)

Abby- I love old black & white movies but my favorite films are in glorious color, The Godfather I & II, Vertigo and Lawrence of Arabia. But Casablanca would be very high on that list too.
I love talking old movies with your Mom. We haven't done that in awhile.

Have you read Dare Me? A very dark YA, that I just finished.

Me likes Casablanca too! And a score of other black & white movies.

I misspoke when I said that there are no common mangas between the two of us, I read Fairy Tail too, though I have only read the first 10 volumes so far.

Your artwork looks great, I am quite the creatively challenged one. My father had a line while I was growing up, "You cannot draw a straight line, even with a ruler!"

Like Piyush, I love "My Fair Lady." It is one of my very favorite older movies. "The Sound of Music" is another of my favorite older movies too, but that's more along the musical lines and you didn't ask for that genre, but I can't help adding it in since I mentioned MFL already. ;)

It's hard for me to think of an older favorite movie that isn't a musical. Hmmm. A conundrum. I'll have to think on that one.

So... wishing for you and the whole Pecan Paradisio clan a wonderful and

Oh, my! Old movies. There are many I've loved. The Seattle Art Museum used to have a series of showing old black and white movies such as Bette Davis made. I became a huge fan of Katherine Hepburn, and Lauren Bacall, and the like. I really need to write up a list of movies I have loved and see if I can see some of them again.

Right now I am finding that I've become a huge fan of Alan Furst's novels about World War II spies as they have much the same atmosphere as the old black and white films!

I hope you have a wonderful week. I have today "off" from my usual duty of driving to my niece's and helping her youngest kids get off to school. I hope to focus on some work I must do this week so I can focus on reading later in the week although as a part of my deck is being repaired today it may be hard to concentrate. I will do my best.

Hello Everyone! So sorry that I have been absent here for about a week. I got sick and hardly felt up to anything. I'll get caught back up today and hopefully get some reviews posted this week.

>128 mckait: I agree about that, it is wonderful to just have a conversation about stuff even if we don't agree. Some movies aren't for everyone. I love Casablanca, but if it's not your cup of tea then you shouldn't force yourself to watch it.

>129 msf59: You will probably be horrified by this...but I have never seen the Godfather. Dan and my parents watched it the other night, but unfortunately, I was sick and so was up in my room. I love color movies of course as well. All my favorite movies are in color as well. My mom and I talk movies every so often; our biggest disagreement is about The Maltese Falcon. It is one of Mum's favorite movies...I am not it's biggest fan. I have not read Dare Me, I will have to check it out. I love reading suggestions.

>130 PiyushC: Excellent! I read Fairytale over the course of the week and am now sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the next one to be printed. I was quite obsessed with reading it. Thank you, I will have to post some of my characters soon, I do those in a different style. Aww, that's so sad, all it takes is a bit of encouragement and some determination. I started really applying myself after we moved down to Georgia, and my art is hardly recognizable to that of before the move.

>131 wilkiec: Thank you, those bunny's are super cute! I want to scoop them up and kiss them about a million times. I hope you had a good Easter yourself.

>132 jnwelch: The weekend wasn't as good as I was hoping due to sickness, but Easter Day was very fun. My Mum and Dad bought us kids candy and we watched movies all day while eating chocolate. As I got my hands on the remotes first, we watched two of the Harry Potter movies first thing in the morning.

>133 connie53: Skimming is fine! Thanks, I hope you had a good one as well.

>134 TinaV95: Any old movie counts. I like The Sound of Music myself, though it has been several years since I last saw it. Thanks for the Easter Greetings! We all had fun.

>135 Crazymamie: Hello Mum. That pic made me laugh out loud.

>136 maggie1944: Lauren Bacall, she was sooo talented. I couldn't believe that her movie debut as a teenager was in The Big Sleep (another favorite of mine). I haven't read many novels about either of the World Wars as I read mostly fantasy, but my Mum often reads books that sound like old movies. I'm glad that you're enjoying them so much. Is there anything better than finding a good book? I hope you got your work all done and can now relax. So far my week has been pretty good.

>137Thanks Rae! Me too! I'm so close... only 5 more to go! I did reach 171 books read for this year, so my goal of reading more books this year than I did last year has already been completed!

Happy Thursday Everyone! I am hoping that everyone has had a good week so far and that they are looking forward to an even better weekend. Things have been sloggish here in Georgia as I haven't been feeling up to much. I have gotten quite a bit of reading and artwork done, which is good. My schoolwork is going fine, but I am disappointed with the book we are currently reading for english. It is not as interesting as I would prefer. Hopefully I will finish quickly and will be able to start something better suited to my tastes. I will spend the rest of today doing work and catching up on the threads (yikes!).

>146 Thebookdiva: - That's a tease, Abby! What book are you reading that is so disappointing?

148Thebookdiva
Apr 25, 2014, 10:43 am

It's called A Severe Mercy by Sheldon Vanauken. It's well written, I just can't seem to get interested in the story. The last book I read for school was Wuthering Heights, which I loved, so that might be part of the problem.

Happy Saturday Everyone! It's finally the weekend! The weather is looking nice out and most of the family is already up and busy. I just got up, so...I'm not so busy yet. Yesterday we spent a nice evening out by the pool. Us kids got in and Mum read in a comfy chair beside the pool. It was great. When my dad came home he got in too! After the pool we ordered some mellow mushroom (my favorite restaurant) which was, of course, delicious, and while we ate we watched The Hobbit:The Desolation of Smaug. All in all, it was a wonderful evening. And to make the day even better, two books arrived for me from Amazon! I received: The Art of Kiki's Delivery Service by Hayao Miyazaki and Sword Art Online vol.1 which was just translated over into English. I have been waiting a very very long time for Sword art Online to be translated into English, so I am over the moon that I now have my hands on a copy.

>158 Oberon: Miyazaki is my art idol. Seeing studio Ghibli would be fun. I was so sorry to hear that he was retiring this year-I will not have any more of his fabulous works to look forward too. I have not yet seen The Wind Rises, as our movie theater has not and will not be playing it. I plan on buying it when it comes out. It's still saddening though.

>159 mckait: I am feeling a lot better today. I think that the sickness has past. Unfortunately, I now think that I gave it to Mum. Getting books is always exciting! Thank you for the fun wishes. I wish you a fabulous day as well!

>160 Thebookdiva: I saw The Wind Rises. It was very good although I prefer his more fantastic films better.

It is really a shame that he is retiring - I have been looking forward anxiously to each new movie and it is sad to not have that to look forward to.

>162 GeezLouise: Thanks Rae, same to you.

>163 Oberon: That's good that you liked it. I hadn't heard many people's opinion on it. I look forward to seeing it, although Kiki's Delivery Service will probably remain my favorite.

I know. It's hard to believe that there won't be any more movies with his iconic stamp on them. I wouldn't be surprised if he wrote some more in his retirement. I hope he does at least.

Hello! The weekend was quite fun. We were invited to a group 'fun day' at my dad's partner's church, so most of us went to that. I have to admit that I had my doubts about going, but it turned out to be very fun. The only downer was that I twisted my ankle while playing volleyball. It's quite sore today, but my dad says that it will heal in a few days. This week is looking up with nice weather & some fun art projects I'm about to start.
