Picture books with a difference

I recall reading The Magic Faraway Tree when I was younger and that had some great illustrations in it. I believe that was written by Enid Blyton. This is a children's book series that I feel is timeless, but I never read anything similar to it in my youth. Is there anything as whimsical for the same age group that is newer with illustrations?
