Trying to Remember a Book from School - drama/journey? low reading level?

It was like late elementary school or middle school, roughly 6-7 years ago:

There were these kids that were abandoned by their mom somewhere in Maryland and tried to reach another place for home, like somewhere around Baltimore.

There was a movie made off this book too.

Any idea what this was?

Possibly Homecoming? It matches on young adult, kids abandoned by mother, and traveling to other place; and it was made into a TV movie. Looks like it isn't set in Maryland, though.

I think Homecoming does have a Maryland connection - pretty sure they end up near the Chesapeake.
