The story was told from the point of view of a reptilian soldier. I remember a part where the reptiles discovered that the species they were fighting could see color, so they bred soldiers that could also see color.
I think the narrator was put into hibernation between battles, but I'm not sure of that.

Are you looking for a short story? Your description reminds me of a short story by Christopher Anvil called "The Gentle Earth". I haven't read it in a long time, so don't remember anything about the soldiers being able to see color, but the hibernation part is in the story.
I believe you can read it for free on-line at The World Turned Upside Down by David Drake, Eric Flint & Jim Baen.
The story is fun to read.
If you can't find it, let me know, I've got the link for it somewhere.

I didn't have any success finding more than a small story sampling from The World Turned Upside Down available online, but http://www.freesfonline.de/ was able to direct me to Anvil's The Trouble with Humans collection instead:

Pretty sure that's a book by Robert Asprin. I believe it's The Bug Wars, but I don't own a copy to check and it's been at least a couple of decades since I read it.
