I'm definitely a completist and like that series pages show related short stories and omnibus editions, but sometimes I truly just want to see books 1-13, not including short stories 0.5, 0.7, 1.5, 1.6, etc.

I'd love the ability to show and hide these at will, which I imagine would take some kind of toggle indicating what is an omnibus and what is a short work.

Good idea!

A switch like this would be really cool! I agree that sometimes I want to see all the short stories/omnibuses and sometimes I don't.

This is a good idea! I would like to see this as well!

That's not just a pony, that's a pegasus - we've been clamoring for the Contained In information to get used for something for years to no avail.

To be clear: I am not making fun of you. I am not mocking your idea. I am saying "yeah, this would be awesome, but I think it would never happen."

You may be able to get support for creating "Novels Only" series as a workaround, leaving out short stories and omnibuses, which is far from ideal but doesn't actually require involvement from the developers.

>4 lorax: Good point. I appreciate your comment! I want to think about the "Novels Only" series idea, but of course then it makes any one user look like they have a lot of extra series.....

Novels-only is the way to go for me. The series list for the Liaden Universe was a little unwieldy, so I created the Liaden Universe Novels series, which is also getting unwieldy as people add omnibuses. But they're all at the end, so they don't bother me as much. 23 vs 48 is still a significant improvement. Other people must agree, or I'm sure it would have been deleted by now.

Someone I don't know (Conkie) has been active in working on Common Knowledge for series like Tom Swift. I was adding some new acquisitions yesterday and noticed this.

Tom Swift

Included are numerous modern print-on-demand omnibus editions of the public domain texts (1-25) are added to this.

Now, if there were work relationships assigned for these ("contains", "contained in") then it might be possible to have a control to view separate works vs. omnibus editions.

It is rather pointless to have a count of items in a series list and a count of the ones you have. I have all of the vintage copies of Tom Swift but I'm not going to get these omnibus editions populated from Project Gutenberg texts.

>6 timepiece:

For some series, stories are important as well - some authors decide to make a major character change in a story now and then. So just saying "novels only" won't always work.

What may work probably is an ability to mark a work in a series as "major" and supply a toggle to show minor works only. But then it will be an editing war on what is considered major in a series...

One thing that's slightly bothered me is the inability to define exactly what a work is - omnibus volume of works by single author, stand alone work with single author, ditto multiple author, anthology of single author's work chosen by same, anthology of single author's work chosen and edited by A N Other etc down to novella / short story contained within another work. Being able to set that definition would I think help enormously (along with being able to attribute works to multiple authors in your catalogue without doing multiple entries).

You could then set flags on the series page to 'show all types' or show 'selected types'.

I like that!

Life is messy and series's are messy, at least potentially.
I'd rather be able to see all the possible relevant entries. I already have a toggle app -- it's called my brain. If I want to see only the novels I just ignore the other stuff.

I say this will all due respect.
I just don't think it's going to be possible to perfectly resolve these series questions.
