a gate?

I'm ready to pull my hair out! I've been searching for this book for hours. I read it in third grade but I was a bit advanced for my age so I'm not really sure. It must be a juvi book.

All remeber is that there was a girl with a bunch of pets. There was one named billy and another named bear. I can't remember the others. If there were others. They crossed over this gate or border and her pets turned into half human/animal things. I think bear turned into a bear.

I thought the title was The Black Gate but I haven't been able to find anything on it. The cover had a redhaired girl on it. She was drawn. I think. Thank you!

I did too and the sequel. There still isn't a third to complete the trilogy.
