Was this fiction or nonfiction? Did you read this recently? Was it intended for adult readers? Was the setting contemporary or an earlier time period?

This was fiction in an earlier time period. May have been intended to young readers as she lives with her father in what they call the "chummery".

Not Day of the Scorpian then; it only fit your description at a stretch in any case.

Okay, that suggests her father was an officer in the British Army (a chummery was where unmarried officers lived in India and Burma; was her mother dead?)

Can you remember any more details? The more we have to go on, the more likely someone will be able to find the book for you...

I believe her mother was dead. Her father was not in the military, possibly was a teacher. A family of wild young girls lived next door to her and her father. She had a friend who she met at school from a wealthy Indian family. I don't remember too much about when she returns but I think there was a lot about the Indian friend and her family. I thought the book might be by Rumer Godden but if so I couldn't figure out which one.

Thanks but I had already checked that website and none of the books mentioned was the book I am looking for. And I checked the lapl.org list of Rumer Godden books but didn't find what I was looking for.

I finally figured out the book was by Elizabeth Cadell and called A Lion in the Way. But thanks to everyone who responded to my quest!
