The book is science fiction.

I read only the first couple of chapters back in summer of 1973. The paperback book might have been published in 1973 or 1972 (likely not later than 1970).

The back cover I think had cover text that had some of the following description in it: “The story takes place in the far future. The Earth has been long forgotten. The spaceships they could not remember how to repair.”

The main character I think fought with a sword (the book had a science fiction/barbarian plot to it?). I believe he gets into a fight at the start of the book. I don’t remember the reason. He goes to a bar. He meets a woman who is wearing only colored vapors or gas held in place by a force shield (hopefully she does not get caught in a strong wind, and no the book was not purchased in an adult bookstore – it was a regular retail type).

After the bar, he either escapes on a space ship as a passenger or is shanghaied.

The book might have indicated that it had illustrations in it on the cover, like the Daw paperbacks. I do not think it was published by Daw.

Also it is not:

Colin Wilson's Space Vampires (a.k.a. Lifeforce)
