Hi everyone, this is my 7th annual category challenge and this year I'm doing something different since I know that 225 books are beyond my ability and overlaps in 2013 drove me crazy so
I'm going to be doing a 2,015 pager - 15 categories and each category needs to have 2,015 pages read. So chunksters will count more than lightweights. Audio books will count equivalent pages as regular books.
The real challenge will be to have at least 75% of the books I read come off my TBR pile - meaning the books had to be in my possession prior to 2015, either on my Nook, Kindle, MP3 for audio, or physical shelves unless they are ARCs or ER books which need to be read in a timely manner.

In 2015 I'll be continuing the following formal challenges:

The 75 Book Challenge This is where I spend most of my time. I can chat about my grandchildren, themes for the day or just anything I feel like as well as BOOKS.
US Presidents Challenge So far I'm partially finished with Teddy Roosevelt - I'm losing steam. I'm hoping to catch up and proceed through WWI so that the Roaring 20s and the great depression are due in 2016. Needless to say, this challenge has been extended to 2020 at least.
European Challenge - I still have 2/3 of Europe to explore. Hopefully, a few foreign countries are in my future this year since World War I took place in Europe.
50 States challenge - Only seven states left on the itinerary, and I'm hoping to finish this challenge in 2015.
Miscellanous monthly challenges that will help me find new things to stretch my reading include TIOLI Challenges in the 75 book Challenge as well as the CAT challenges - History and SciFiFantasyCAT and the BINGODOG.

Then there are also several personal challenges that I will be endeavoring to work on in 2015.

Bookshelf Bootie - I'm trying to remind myself that when books come into to my house they need to be read soon. My goal is that 75% of new books in are read in the current year. Hopefully, that will include the books that I actually purchased as well as downloaded to my Nook so that those books that show in my acquisition ticker will be read in timely manner. I want to dwindle down my TBRs by reading old books as well as all the new acquired. This will be tough. Books marked with % are sitting on my shelf and should get priority.
ROOT Challenge is my effort to read 84 books off my own shelves (This includes books on my Nook/Kindle, ER & ARCs I receive for review, and audiobooks that I've downloaded in the past.) I've resolved to reduce the number of ARCs/ERs that I request so that more of the old books have priority.
Series Catchup - Since this year my entire theme for the Category Challenge is series - I should make great progress in catching up and even getting current on many series.

I was originally going to go with a baseball theme but then I decided since Linda was using that theme I'd try something different. (I'll save it for next year.) I'm always complaining about all the series that I'm behind on, I decided to make my categories reflect the theme of different book series. Most of these are mysteries, but some are romances and there are even a few CLASSICS that come in a series.

Now that everything has been explained, here are my categories for 2015:
I. I finished the bottle already? - Wine and cheese mysteries
II. Ready, Set, Go! - Firsts in a new series
III. Ouch! I dropped the hammer on my foot - Home Improvements/Repair and Crafts
IV. You have the right to remain silent (as you read) - Legal/police mysteries
V. How'd they do that? - Magical series (1)
VI. Ah,to be young again! - Young Adult series COMPLETED
VII. Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? - Romance series COMPLETED
VIII. In Flanders fields the poppies blow - HISTORIES World War I concentration COMPLETED

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below...

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields...

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands, we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields...M

BTW, you are seven years ahead of me. This is my first category challenge and I can't wait for the games to begin!

I just realized that unless I count the remaining Oz books as true "Classics" I have no CLASSICS on schedule for 2015. Maybe it will be good to take a year off from these older books since I usually have trouble enjoying them.

Nov 13, 2014, 12:16 pm

>29 cyderry: especially since you still don't love many of the "classic" books you read, I think taking a year off sounds like a good idea. How about broadening the category to include both classics and other "traditional" books - you could include anything that has been around for a while and is well-loved that looks interesting to you, things you've always wanted to read and never did, re-reads of books you've loved from the past, things like that.

32majkia
Nov 15, 2014, 11:01 am

I have trouble with the whole 'classics' thing.

What's classic to me in my 60s mightn't be the same thing to someone in her 30s. And I have an even bigger issue with some 'authority figure' deciding what is a classic and telling me that list is some sort of 'true' list. (yeah, rebel at heart).

You could define the term any way that works for you, Cheli, much like Sandy suggests above.

AUTHOR: Doris Kearns Goodwin
DATE READ: February 1 - February 28
Series/ Progress: Presidents #26,#27
Book type: audiobook
Category: In Flanders fields the poppies blow - HISTORIES World War I concentration

Goodwin is superb as an historian and in this book we see Teddy Roosevelt and William Howard Taft as individuals but also we see how working shoulder to shoulder, they created a greater good often at the cost of their own ambitions.

TR's personality comes through as adventurer and master politician. Taft comes through as a loving, generous, gentle giant who twice refused appointment to the Supreme Court (his greatest desire) because he believed his efforts elsewhere were needed. In this book we also see the development of the power of the press and how a good politician could utilize that power.

This book was extremely informative, however it could have been just as informative without being so wordy. Several passages were repetitive and could easily been omitted.

I thought this mystery was great because at the very instant of the mystery I thought I knew who the murderer was and followed that convention until the end when I was greatly surprised at being wrong!

Kate, Michael, and Emma have been sent back to the orphanage in Baltimore but Kate realizes that they are still in danger and when the storm comes, Kate is separated from Michael and Emma leaving Michael promising to watch over his little sister until Kate returns. Kate is thrown back into time by the Atlas until just before the magical world separates itself in 1899 while Michael and Emma connect with Dr. Pym and start out on a search for the second book - the Fire Chronicle.

>89 cyderry: I have kind of given up on the Ferris series. As the series progressed, Ferris got further and further away from needlework and got into things in which I had little or no interest. I hated to see a great series ruined because the author strayed from the series premise, but that is exactly what happened.

The BBQ series 1st wasn't great, I agree but I wanted to if it improved with the 2nd. Not in a rush to get further.

As for Hannah, I have one more to be all caught up. I keep hoping that she will make a decision for her love life but with the cliffhanger from this one, I'm thinking I'll have to keep going.

AUTHOR: Adam Hochschild
DATE READ: April 10 - April 26

Category: In Flanders fields the poppies blow - HISTORIES

I thought that as an avid reader and a lover of history that I knew the basics about World War I. I'd heard about trench warfare, chlorine gas, mustard gas, and shell shock but I didn't really understand them and I wasn't prepared for what I learned while reading this book.

They called it the Great War. However, this war was apparently completely unnecessary. That's right - 8.5 million casualties, 12-13 million civilian deaths totally unnecessary brought on by a war-hungry monarch and military men who wouldn't accept the changes that the 20th century had brought to the battlefield.

The Allied Forces were actually losing the battle until the Americans joined the fight. The Treaty that ended the war was so vindictive that many historians see it as a contributor to World War II.

The book was slow to start, had some areas where it was extremely repetitive concerning the women that were against the war, but highly informative.

I had much more to say in my full review.

This book was definitely not what I expected. However, it was thoroughly engaging and filled some of the gaps from other books on why the American involvement in WWI was as it was.

This narrative was a combination of the real life stories of about a dozen 100+ yr. old WWI veterans - their successes and failures and what made then so unique. For example, one man walked to school everyday (2 miles) , then participated in the war, and on his return, married, got a job that he bicycled to 5 miles each way every day (rain, snow, didn't matter). Eventually he got a car, but at age 80 he could no longer drive so when his wife was placed in a nursing home a mile away from his home, he walked every day to have meals with her (3x a day no matter the weather). This stunned me. I remember hearing how my grandfather walked everywhere, but because we live in an age where we drive everywhere, it seems unfathomable.

Yes, this book showcased individuals, but it also showed me a great deal about the time and the differences that these brave men endured.

This story was riveting as Anna fought not just the elements but her lack of preparedness. Having no food or water and having only her professional tracking abilities, Anna and her friends had to combat armed men twice their size.

What surprised me in this story was the missing descriptions of the nature elements. It was more involved in the action than the scenery which usually in this series takes a major part. It didn't detract from the story, just surprised me a bit.

Challenge Book# 63

TITLE: Staged to Death ★★★
AUTHOR: Karen Rose Smith
DATE READ: June 22 - June 24
Series/ Progress: Caprice De Luca Mystery 1/4
Book type: e book
Category: Not another one! - Firsts in new series

Caprice DeLuca, a home stager is helping her high school friend, Roz, prepare to sell the house that she and her husband built when they were married. Trouble in paradise and murder in the study of Roz's husband have Caprice assisting Roz to avoid the paparazzi as well as a stint in jail. Caprice starts asking questions about Roz's husband's business, finds an attorney for Roz, and sets out to discover the murderer.

Okay, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the story and the main characters but there were just a few too many other characters rolling through this one - 37 major/minor characters is way too many. I really feel that with some rethinking, some of these minor characters could have been rolled in together.

Hopefully, future installments will have a lesser population.

Challenge Book# 64

TITLE: A Deadly Cliché ★★★½
AUTHOR: Ellery Adams
DATE READ: June 25 - June 28
Series/ Progress: Books by the Bay 2/7
Book type: ARD
Category: Never go to bed alone - Book based mysteries

I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed the first in this series but was quickly reminded by the wonderful characters and the writing that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Olivia and her Dog, Captain Haviland, find a body buried in the sand one morning while strolling on the beach. Before the end, they will be finding or connected to several other murders which all have a cliché portrayed by or near the body. However, the Cliché murders aren't the only mystery that Olivia has to face when an unexpected letter comes and throws her for a loop.

Great fun and hurrying toward the next one!

Challenge Book# 66

TITLE: Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling ★★★
AUTHOR: Ross King
DATE READ: June 14 - June 29
Book type: ARD
Category: In Flanders fields the poppies blow - HISTORIES

This was an interesting book that at times got weighed down by the descriptions in vast detail of the processes that were used for different types of painting including but not restricted to the frescoes that were painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. This was really more a combined biography of Michelangelo, Pope Julius II, and Raphael.

The pictures of the Sistine Chapel frescoes were beautiful but it would have been much nicer if they had not been all lumped together in one pictures but the panels shown individually. I often had to search the Internet for an individual image so that I could understand what the writer was talking about.

I'm halfway through the year and have read 66 books sticking with my theme of histories and mysteries. I really wanted to catchup with the series that I had already started and I think I'm doing pretty well in that area. I also wanted to read more of the books that I already have either sitting on my shelves or lolling on my e-readers. (My Nook books seem to be growing on their own!) So here is how the numbers break down for the first 6 months.

New series started................11
Second in a series...................9
Third in a series....................11
4th or more..........................26
Histories................................6
Fiction - misc and book club.....3
Series brought current............11
Series still behind.................144
Categories completed...........4/15 27%

ARCs 3
library books read 7

Best mystery of the year so far Destroyer Angel
Best surprise of the year so far Front Page Fatality
Best history of the year so far Bully Pulpit

So here are my goals for the remainder of the year:

"New series started - 11" somehow they just reach out and grab at you, don't they? I'm thinking of making series catch-up part of my plan for next year.

>>151 dudes22: I think that I'm going the same path next year for two reasons - 1) I still have "Series still behind.................144 and 2) I've really enjoyed not feeling guilty about what I'm reading because those series books are waiting in line. I'll have to see if I can figure out another theme or just add another category.

Histories and mysteries - so poetic!
This topic was continued by Cheli's Series of Categories in 2015 Part 2.
