After hearing him talk at a recent CHE meeting in London, I've now read Gay life: straight work, the autobiography of Donald West. It provides a fascinating account of his life as a psychiatrist and criminologist in England during the second half of the twentieth century. At the time he remained firmly in the closet, but his book now gives a surprisingly frank account of his private life as well as of his professional activities.
