To get LT to avoid movie recommendations, except on movies, I did an analysis of formats, and:
There are 19,141 works probably or certainly a movie.
The most popular is The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, followed by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
The total number of items cataloged is at least 125,000.
I may post more stats here as I go.

No question—31,000 works are more popular.

>2 jjwilson61: I don't catalogue movies on LibraryThing. If there were a MovieThing, though, or a way to keep books separate from movies within LibraryThing (allow people to choose whether or not recommendations show movies, whether or not movies count as similar items for similar libraries, etc) I would. I expect there's not an insignificant portion of people on the site that would do so as well. I think the fact that the single movie is insignificant against popular books on the site is because while there are many people who would enjoy the cataloguing aspects of LT to be used for movies (with movie related fields), they don't want the movies mixed in with the books in other areas of the site.

Right. LibraryThing is going to make it easier to catalog non-books, but we have to be very careful about how that data shows up elsewhere.

I've done a little bit of cataloging on Take11. Someone here on LT suggested it as a movie cataloging site that's similar to LT.

... does that mean that LT is going to make it possible for me to catalogue my movies here? Because that would be great news! (Would it be too much to hope for dedicated fields for director, actors, music, studio, format, subtitles, ...?)
I, too, have toyed with Take11, since it's the most LT-like in its approach to tagging, but I'd move to LT in a heartbeat if a movie catalogue became viable here.

As I wrote on LT several years ago, I want my films to be here with my books. I have tried to separate my films from my books.
A different collection and a distinguisher in the title of the film, and use the director as the author etc. etc.
I would love it if Tim allowed me to specify what info in what collection would be used for statistic.
I too looked at Take11, but it wasn't LT :-) I hope my 600+ films haven't interfered with anyone else. I doubt they have.
As I mentioned on my profile page music is probably much more difficult to slot into LT.
Guido.

I'll believe that when I see it. Is this going to be like how you were going to have a better way of including information about what short stories were included in an anthology, so we aren't supposed to list them to get them in the Contains feature? So you'll make it super-easy for people to include movies and then three or four years later let those of us who don't want to see them filter them out somehow?

>4 bestem: Yes, me too, in a heartbeat I would catalog my movies here if it ever became feasible. I've tried several other sites, but they are not LT. Also, I would like all my media in one place, but of course I don't want it to interfere with other folks use of the site, so for now it's just books for me. :)

Thank you.
I'd like to have you be able to list your movies here without interfering with others' use of the site, too, and I appreciate your consideration in holding off until that becomes possible.

I would like to catalog my movies if it were clear that they were movies. What irritates me more is all the short stories that folks have cataloged as if if they were books.

I agree with lorax. I'd like to see the LT developers make it easier to catalog books (Add Books redo? Please?) and book sections (short stories within anthologies, for example) before they address movies, perfumes and bobcats ;-)
