The Small House at Allington is the fifth novel in Anthony Trollope's series known as the "Chronicles of Barsetshire", first published in 1864. It enjoyed a revival in popularity in the early 1990s when the British prime minister, John Major, declared it as his favourite book.

I have finally got around to reading it and I was surprised to find that there are no clergymen among the main characters, somehow I associated the Chronicles with a Church of England theme. And the heroine remains unwed at the end, which is not something I expect in a Victorian novel. There's quite a lot of overlap with the Palliser world in this, too.
