Since I am currently reading a Ruth Rendell book, I thought it appropriate to note that she passed away today: http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-32564813

Reading Children of the Revolution by Peter Robinson.

>2 seitherin: It was sad news, although Rendell was not one of my favorites.
I am just starting The Maltese Goddess.

How sad about Ruth Rendell. I've read her books for decades. Thanks for the link.
Just started reading the first Longmire book - The Cold Dish by Craig Johnson, thanks to LT member recommendations. I'm liking it from the start.

Listening to Caribbean Mystery. I had never liked Miss Marple when I was younger, preferring Poirot books. Now I've been listening to the whole Miss Narple series and loving her. I'm kind of glad I skipped them all those years ago as I now get to enjoy all new to me Christies.

>10 raidergirl3: Same here! And even some of the Poirots are new to me because as a kid I would read the same ones about 50 times. :)
Currently reading The Low Road, by Reginald Hill.

I've read all of Michael Connelly's books. Can't put them down!

Finished Prime Cut by Alan Carter. Had a bit of a problem with the Australian slang until I got used to it. Started Under the Skin by E. E. Richardson (can't get touchstones to give me author names). This one is a blend of crime and urban fantasy. Sounded interesting.

I'm about to start Bangkok Rules, recommended by cameling.

Finished Under the Skin and started the second book, Disturbed Earth.

Finished a fantasy novel and started Everything Burns by Vincent Zandri.

I am reading The Devil of Nanking by Mo Hayder. This novel seems to have a few names. There is a mystery element to the novel but also sort of a diary of the fall of Nanking and Japanese atrocities associated with the event. It is probably a fake diary for use in the story but it certainly adds a sense of realism to the read. This is not an "action" thriller... it may seem to be a slow read to some. But if you like a well-written novel you will find it a page-turner as I do.

Just got And Sometimes I Wonder About You by Walter Mosley, the new Leonid McGill mystery.

Re-re-reading Jurassic Park in honor of its 25th anniversary. It holds up pretty well although I can't help comparing it to the movie as I read.

Just finished the fourth in the Philip Dryden mystery series: The Coldest Blood by Jim Kelly.

I'm reading Blood Line by Lynda La Plante. So far so good.

I have had the same experience. Agatha Christie used to bore me--too impatient I guess. But now that I am much older, I really enjoy her writing. The same with Dorothy Sayers.

Just finishing my 4th Bryant and May Mystery "Seventy Seven Clocks" by Christopher Fowler. What an unusual pair of octogenarian detectives. Does anyone enjoy London's Chris Fowler's work as much as I do? If you do then what are some of your favorites?

I'm just starting my first Alexander McCall Smith mystery The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection. I really don't know what took me so long!

I am trying a new author for me with Fleshmarket Close by Ian Rankin

>25 ebeach: I love this series. My most highly rated (4/5) are: Ten Second Staircase (Bryant & May 4), Bryant and May Off the Rails (Bryant & May 8) and Bryant & May and the Memory of Blood (Bryant & May 9).

One from a Jim Kelly series that I hadn't tried before: Death Wore White, a Peter Shaw & George Valentine story.

The Reckoning by Rennie Airth. One of his John Madden books. Good story.

I've just finished Looking For Chet Baker by Bill Moody. It's a good mystery within a mystery set in Amsterdam, of course, with lots of jazz discussion and lingo.

I've just finished The Last Minute by Jeff Abbott and am about to begin To Darkness and to Death by Julia Spencer-Fleming.

just started The Lost Empress by Steve Robinson. They're ok, but follow a formula I think I'm tired of now. Plus the lead character is written as an American and the writer knows sweet FA about how Americans talk and think. Like I've never heard anyone refer to the side of the road as the verge here. Like if you had to swerve to avoid an accident you'd say you ended up on the side of the road or on the sidewalk or median or in the ditch. Not the verge. Ugh. Annoying.

I could not finish Fleshmarket Close by Ian Rankin. There were 3 story threads in the book interwoven and hard to tell them apart. I loved the detail of life in Scotland but man! there was no juice in the story. I gave it an honest try, reading about half the book but gave up on it.
I then moved onto The Enemy by Lee Child. I finished the book in 3 days. I was very critical of the previous book in the Reacher series, Persuader trashing it after 20 pages because of mind-numbing gratuitous violence. The Enemy on the other hand had 3 minor episodes of violence that were appropriate. It took you back to Reacher's military days... a very welcome background thriller which had many twists and turns in the story.... loved it!

Just finished Private Games by James Patterson. It was fast paced and slightly entertaining but a formulaic over-the-top story about a psychotic killer. I'm now reading Snapshot by Lis Wiehl. I like the premise but the writing is a bit choppy so far. I'll continue though.

I have just read The Red Box by Rex Stout I have not read many of the famous Nero Wolfe mysteries and I am intrigued by his uncompromising character and very unhealthy lifestyle. The ending of the story also raised ethical issues that I am still pondering. There is relatively little action. It is clear that the thinking out of the solution to a crime is the real point with Wolfe's assistant Archie doing the leg work and also providing some much needed light relief to the reader. I was interested enough to seek out more of these books.

I've been meaning to try reading this series for a couple of years now, every since I stumbled across the TV adaptation on A&E, and wonder now why I waited so long. I really liked this 1st novel in the Longmire mystery series: The Cold Dish by Craig Johnson. Already requested the next one from my local library.

I have recently finished Burn This by Helen McCloy (the last in her Dr Basil Willing series), as well as Be Kind to the Killer by Henry Wade. Didn't enjoy either very much. But, have just started Dead Man’s Quarry by Ianthe Jerrold - much more my cup of tea :)

Just starting the 5th Travis McGee, A Deadly Shade of Gold. McGee seems to be making more snide social commentary than I remember in the previous books or maybe I am just noticing it more.

One Coffee With by Margaret Maron...who poisoned the professor's coffee? So-so, but it's user fail on my part--too many interruptions.

Just finished Pop Goes The Weasel by James Patterson. I'm slowly but surely trying to get through the series. I like that his books are so fast paced and it doesn't take me long to read his books.

I've just started my second Bess Crawford mystery, An Impartial Witness, by Charles Todd. I'm a huge fan of the Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear and this is reminiscent of those mysteries. So far, so good.

Read Long Lost which is another in the Myron Bolitar series by Harlan Coben. It was ok. Ludicrous in some elements, but fun. Began Unnatural Exposure which is a Kay Scarpetta novel by Patricia Cornwell. Boy does Kay ever have anger management issues. She's really mental.
