Hey everyone. I'm trying to recall the title of a book I read several times in elementary school. It was an illustrated children's horror book, possibly an anthology or collection of stories, but I'm not certain. What little I do remember about it pertains to the imagery, as I seem to recall a bag of bones sitting on a rickety old porch. I also vaguely remember either the title or the story having something to do with "light". I have been scouring the Internet for hours with no luck. Any ideas on what this book might be?

The Scary Stories to tell in the Dark trilogy was wildly popular during the 80s and 90s, and contains distinctive artwork. Does that style look familiar?

Unfortunately, no. The artwork in those books is of a vastly different style than the book I remember from my childhood, which featured a much rougher quality of sketching. Given the complete lack of information I've been able to find online, I can only assume it was some obscure thing that only existed in my school's library. Oh well, I was just curious to see if it rang a bell with anyone. Thanks anyway!

Too bad! Hopefully your description will ring a bell with someone else.

This was a picture book? Was the bag of bones transparent or net or what? Was the whole house on the cover or just the porch?

Might be a long shot but I think there were some illustrations in the Scary Stories for Sleepovers series. Black-and-white, like sketches. I can't recall for certain, though.

It was an illustrated book with hand drawn artwork. If I recall correctly, it was a cloth bag full of bones, placed there by the old woman (possibly a witch) who lived in the house. It was likely just a partial shot of the house, as the porch was featured prominently in the scene. This was a hardcover book, with the cover art comprised of blue, black, and white colors.

It really sounds like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. There are at least 3 or 4 in the series. Might be worth a second look.

Could be Grandpa's Ghost Stories, which has a story about a bag of bones and also a witch. There are some examples of the art here.
