Didn't see a thread for this month yet, so I figured I'd start one. :) What's everybody reading this month? I finished up Sense and Sensibility, which I had started last month, and then breezed through How My Summer Went Up in Flames by Jennifer Salvato Doktorski. Now I've begun The Twelfth Enchantment by David Liss.

Yesterday I FINALLY finished Sarum, by Edward Rutherfurd, and now I'm working on The Likeness, by Tana French.

I've finished All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, which I started last month, and have started Anarchy and Old Dogs by Colin Cotterill in an effort to catch up with this series. I'm also due up next for a couple of library books which will probably show up later this week.

My summer months are slow for reading, but I've just finished Practical Magic, and I'm wandering through Magic Mountain and The Feeling of What Happens, along with Lightning Bug by Donald Harington.

I am currently listening to The Tombs of Atuan by Ursula Le Guin and have started Hemlock Grove by Brian McGreevy.

I didn't get to read Crossing to Safety last month, so I am reading it now and enjoying it very much.

>3 dudes22: Betty, I'm glad that you were able to read All The Light We Cannot See. I keep checking at the library, but it's still about 600 people waiting for maybe 75 copies? The e-book is still a little pricey, but at some point I will probably buy it.

>6 lsh63: - well I was on the list for 6 months to get the ebook from the library and I think I went that way because the list for the actual book was even longer

I'm more than halfway through The Descendants and liking it a lot.

Today I finished At the Water's Edge by Sara Gruen which I liked a lot although it took awhile for me to get into it. I think I'll do a reread next, Light A Penny Candle by Maeve Binchy, it's been a lot of years since I read it, and it will fulfill the Random CAT for July.

We're having a heat wave this week, which means I'm reading lots of little books. Just finished a reread of A Midsummer Night's Dream (belated June HistoryCAT) and am now cueing up The Wolfe Widow, by Victoria Abbott.

Edit: and by "heat wave" I mean "your typical summer weather, high 20s C with humidex values in the high 30s". It just feels like a heat wave because summer started off a bit cooler than usual.

Neither the ebook (which I'm next in line for) nor the library physical book (which is in transit) are here yet, so I've decided to read Lullaby Town by Robert Crais while I'm waiting. I'm not sure if this is "a watched pot never boils" thing or a "as soon as I start it, they'll show up" thing, but I'm hoping it works.

Thank heavens I finished Hemlock Grove which will go down as my worse read of the year as I can't imagine I will encounter anything worse before year end. I am now reading The Shape of Water which I am really enjoying and I have started Light of the Moon by Elizabeth Buchan.

>13 DeltaQueen50: - you shouldn't say that - tempting fate you know!

Sure enough - I got a notice that I could download the ebook I was waiting for and a notice that the book I had on hold was in. When I went to the library, I also "found" a few more I needed.

I've just finished Steal Her Style and I'm reading on The Little Nugget by P.G. Wodehouse. I need to get to the library for a copy of Emma for the group read.

I finished the Southern Reach trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer. I started Burnt Offerings, which is happily '70s-cheesy but still competently written horror. Planning a big beach read month as I'm heading out to Hilton Head this weekend.

I'm reading Road Ends, and loving it. This is the third book by this author that I have read within the last month or so. Crow Lake and The Other Side of the Bridge were also very good.

I am reading and really enjoying A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan, and I have just picked up The White Pearl by Kate Furnivall.

I'm in the middle of Outcasts United: A Refugee Team, an American Town by Warren St. John. I picked it up because my granddaughter has to read this before her freshman year at college and I thought I'd read it too.

I'm still working on In Search of Ulster-Scots Land. I hope to finish the last chapter tonight. My current ebook is Flush: A Biography about Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Cocker Spaniel. I'm listening to His Majesty's Dragon for the SFFF Cat.

I'm just about to finish The Black Count by Tom Reiss which has been very enjoyable.

I've recently started Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri and Between You & Me: Confessions of a Comma Queen by Mary Norris.

On audio I've finished a Maisie Dobbs mystery and started The Sixth Extinction which won the 2015 Pulitzer for general nonfiction and is very interesting so far.

And on my shelf is sitting the new release of Harper Lee's Go Set a Watchman. I've had misgivings about reading it because of the possibility that Harper Lee herself may not be fully competent to decide whether or not to publish it, but it was bought for me as a gift and I can't resist reading it. I love To Kill a Mockingbird and am so curious to read this initial attempt to see how it morphed into the book I love. After I finish any of the above non-audio books, I will start it.

I have just started Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. Another post-apocalyptic YA series... here we go!

23> About Go Set a Watchman - it's supposedly the novel Harper Lee originally submitted to be published, but the publisher/editor was more interested in the parts about Scout's childhood, so that's how she ended up writing To Kill a Mockingbird. I've heard some "disturbing" things about the characters, so I'm just going to look at it as a rough draft. It's not really a sequel since it was written first.

I just finished listening to Our Mutual Friend by Dickens. Very enjoyable if you like Victorian literature. I have also been reading Fish Tails (almost done) which is the third book of a trilogy. I am finding this latest book of Tepper's sadly not up to her typical standard -- I like the plot fine but the book needs better editing :(

After seeing a few folks reading Three Men in a Boat last month, which has been on my TBR for a couple of years, I decided to make it my next audiobook. Just barely started but already have had several laughs!

Finished The Jungle Books which I loved. Am currently alternating between Go Set a Watchman, The Girl on the Train, and The Secret History of Wonder Woman - all of which have been quite enjoyable so far.

I've finished and reviewed Go Set a Watchman and Between You & Me: Confessions of a Comma Queen.

I just finished Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay by Elena Ferrante. It's really the third section of one very long book and the last book will only be released in English in September. I may not read anything until then.

I've just started Emma, I'm still reading The Little Nugget on my Kindle, I'm about two chapters into The Book of Wonders, and I'll be diving into some Sherlock Holmes stories this week.

I picked up Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein after Lori (thornton37814) mentioned it in her thread and raced right through it. I'm in the middle of A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan for the SFFF Cat based on Judy's (DeltaQueen 50) recommendation and still have The Town that Food Saved by Ben Hewitt on my night table.

Jul 29, 2015, 8:38 pm

I finished A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan which I enjoyed a lot and also The Brutal Telling by Lousie Penny which I loved. I've decided to get a jump on my August reading by starting Children of God by Mary Doria Russell which I'm going to read for the SFFF Cat. It's long enough that I don't think I'll be finishing it in Jul. And I really need to get back to The Town that Food Saved so I can return it to the person who lent it to me.

45japaul22
Jul 29, 2015, 8:47 pm

I'm reading The Great Influenza which is really interesting. Also reading The Eustace Diamonds by Trollope and listening to The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga on audio which is really funny.

On the bus I'm reading The Zebra-Striped Hearse, by Ross Macdonald, and at home I'm juggling several books as usual. One is a reread of South Riding, by Winifred Holtby, which is on its way to becoming one of my favourite books.

I finished Tea with the Black Dragon for the SFFCat and read quite a bit of What Makes This Book So Great. I won't be reading it all because of spoilers, so I'm counting it as finished. Now reading Other Worlds Than These for next month's SFFCat theme.
