For all of the nerds like me who think about this sort of thing . . . describe your wand!

Wand cores can be phoenix feather, unicorn tail hair, or dragon heartstring -- or, in rare cases, the hair of a Veela. The wood can be just about anything, apparently. They run from about 8" to about 16" (roughly). Ollivander usually gives them an adjective to describe how stiff or supple they are.

My wand is oak and dragon heartstring, 11 3/4", fairly sturdy. Tell me about yours!

Oh! Good idea for a thread, foggi! :)

Hmm. So many choices.

Maybe mine is sycamore (is that allowed?) and phoenix feather, 11".

Holly, unicorn tail hair, 10 inches, slender, firm but flexible, excellent for charms and defense against the dark arts.

(Holly was reputed to ward off evil by ancient Britons)

10pollysmith
Aug 31, 2007, 11:54 am

offtopic#9 that must be why holly is used at christmastime to decorate

11Marensr
Aug 31, 2007, 11:59 am

Polly- that and it is evergreen so it is still green and available during winter in northern climes -that and pine boughs.

You can tell I would be in herbology huh?

Aug 31, 2007, 12:54 pm

Oh Thanks! Poor Neville.

Actually JKR does a great job of using the history and mythology of plants in her books.

Yew trees have long been considered evil so Voldemort's wand is Yew- Harry's is Holly

Okay I'll stop the lesson now.

17ellenmarine
Sep 8, 2007, 8:05 am

I reckon Rosewood, unicorn hair, about 10", fairly bendy :)

Although I'd love to see if I could rope Ollivander into making a wand using a Thestral tail-hair instead :)

Revived again. I've not heard of one made of apple wood, but I think that would be great with a phoenix feather.

33foggidawn
Mar 5, 2010, 3:38 pm

#32 -- Ooh, cool idea! I like the idea of an applewood wand.

Re-thinking . . . I chose oak way back in post #1, because Espy made me a simple wand to use as a costume prop, and I'm pretty sure that's what he used. However, I think that if I were choosing the wood, I'd actually choose dogwood, which has always been my favorite flowering tree.

34mamzel
Mar 10, 2010, 11:45 am

Keep it running.

Since I grew up in the Caribbean I think mine would have to be made in mahogany with a parrot feather. It would be very sturdy with a sense of humor.

35PollyAnnaHP
Mar 11, 2010, 11:11 pm

Mine would be Willow, 9 3/4 inches with leprechaun hair. Thin and pleasantly springy.

My wand would be oak with a phoenix feather and a dragon heartstring intertwined. It also will be 15 inches long. {15 is my favorite number} {So is three but according to foggidawn that not allowed}

Definately 9 3/4 ", for the symbology with the platform ;)

Mahogany, because it's a pretty colour..

Oh dear, I can't think of anything for inside the wand... maybe just a plain wooden stick just to be different :)

Wow all sound like good wands. I don't know where to begin on my wand...I'm trying to go to Ollivander's at Diagon Alley. (Universal Studios Orlando) to get one though.

52PollyAnnaHP
May 24, 2011, 11:24 am

#51, I wanted to got to Ollivander's when we were there at Christmas time, but the line was extremely long!!! =( I guess I'll have to wait until our next trip in a few years.

53Theamwriter
May 24, 2011, 12:04 pm

#52 - Yeah I was there a month after it opened (husband had a extra credit class assignment to do) and the line was never-ending. So hopefully I can get funds built up so we can go again next year, near my graduation. I was however able to get my hands on a Heroine Granger replica wand while I was there.

54biblioholic29
May 24, 2011, 12:44 pm

#51: Kirby and I went through the line when we went back I don't really think it was worth it. You end up in the same shops as if you stand in the shorter line and unless you happen to be the lucky person picked to play Harry (which was a kid when I was there and I'm willing to bet thats pretty standard) the extra time just wasn't worth it.

55Theamwriter
Edited: May 24, 2011, 12:55 pm

I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I heard the wands that they do for Ollivander's wand shop is based on your birthday. Don't quote me on it, but I thought that was what I heard from one of the people. I could be wrong.

56Renald128
May 24, 2011, 2:41 pm

#55 @Alishamb08 : Before I went to the Wizarding World I did some research and all they say in the forums online is that the line is for the show, and there is a wand for each month but they sell those in the shop too (I will try to find the link with the information tonight) and they sell the replicas as well. Like @biblioholic29 said, this is something you do just one time, but it's not worth it to do the line several times or each time you go to the park and in my case a kid was chosen for the show too.

57Theamwriter
May 24, 2011, 6:02 pm

Yeah I understand them picking children though I wished they picked other people as well. I will probably just go through the line once and then just ask which wand is for my birth month and buy it. I will gladly read the link once you find it. I have watched some of the YouTube videos on that, it looks interesting.

58PollyAnnaHP
May 24, 2011, 7:01 pm

My youngest son bought his wand ( a Voldemort replica) at Dervish & Banges. They had other wands there as well, but I didn't notice anything that had to do with birthdays. It was so crowded you could hardly move in the store though so I'm sure I overlooked many things. =(

59Theamwriter
May 24, 2011, 7:44 pm

#58 -Unfortunately those stores are really small and are connected. Dervishes and Banges is connected to Ollivander's, while where the people come out of Ollivander's. Just like 3 broomsticks and Hog's head is connected, and Honeydukes and Zonko's. When did you go to Wizarding World? I went last year in July (hubby's extra credit class assignment), so it was really crowded then.

#60 - Thanks for posting that for me. I actually went there and then clicked another link to see J. K. Rowling's explanation about the wands and some of the characters. I bookmarked the page.

So my wand would be a Hawthorn wand according to that chart. Good to know for when I go back again.

Jun 2, 2011, 10:06 am

#73 -- I was part of the group that went, and yes, it was crowded! :-) I'd love to go again some time when it is not so hectic. I didn't even go in to any of the stores because I didn't want to deal with that many people in such confined spaces.

75Theamwriter
Jun 2, 2011, 1:51 pm

74: I can understand that! I hated being in those stores especially the Owl Post, which I believe was connected to Ollivander's exit, and Dervish and Bangs. That was horribly crowded. I hear that it is best to go in months that parents can't take their kids due to school, or in the winter months but I have to test that theory.

76pollysmith
Jun 2, 2011, 3:45 pm

the only store I actually got into was Filchs Emporium and Honeydukes.

77Theamwriter
Jun 2, 2011, 4:20 pm

#76: I think they were the only two stores that I could actually take my time looking in them. The others were elbow to elbow crowded. Either way I have to go back so I can go on the rides. I wanted to go on The Forbidden Journey ride was able to go on it.

78PollyAnnaHP
Jun 2, 2011, 9:11 pm

A couple of Universal Studios employees that the hubby & my oldest son were standing in line next to for the Hulk ride told them that it is best to go in January or in early Spring. We are thinking of planning our next trip for early spring, but a few years down the road.

79Theamwriter
