I'm looking for a particular Chad Gadya/One Little Goat picture book that we read when I was a kid, in the '80s. It says "zuzim", not coins. The illustrations show a group of children putting on a play of the song, with costumes and everything. The kid dressed as the cat has a bandaid on their hip where they were "bit by the dog". The kid dressed as the angel of death hangs from what looks like a clothes rack. I seem to remember the art having lots of red and black. I remember the cover also being red and black, or orange and black.

Thanks!

"Chad Gaya" ("One kid") is a children's song traditionally sung at the end of the Pesach Seder., after the seder proper has been concluded The first verse is "Diz'van abba bisrey zoozay," and the refrain is "Chad gadya, chad gadya," which can be roughly translated as One kid that my father bought for two zuzim, one kid, one kid." It's an incremental song, each verse adding onto the previous verse. A cat comes to eat the kid, a dog bites the cat, a stick beats the dog, fire burns the stick, water quenches the fire, an ox drinks the water, a shochet (slaughterer) slaughters the ox, the Angel of Death slays the shochet, and the Holy One kills the Angel of Death. The song has been interpreted in many ways—e.g., as an allegory of history and the Jews' long journey of oppression under various empires.

Are you sure that you're not thinking of a Pesach haggadah? There are so many editions, with new ones being issued every year.

The Ktav Passover Haggadah is yellow, with a red and black geometric border. If this is the one you're thinking of, I'll be happy to send you a couple of copies, as I have extras.

I know what Chad Gadya is and I know what the Haggadah is (ours were blue). I'm looking for a hardback, illustrated children's book.

Could it possibly be this one?

I can't find a color image (here's a black and white one,), but the 1979 publication date and the fact that it's a play with children performing seem to fit your description.

ETA: Color image found! And the colors seem to fit: http://www.amazon.ca/One-Little-Goat-Passover-Song/dp/0823403459

The explanation was for the benefit of others in the forum who might be unfamiliar with it.

Glad you found it.
