Read this years ago and found it riveting. The authorial voice is told by the old lodger who becomes obsessed by Amanda a young girl student who moves into the house - a superb and stylish read with a masterful twist at the end - set in the UK - I so want to read it again and others by the same author - believe another one had a police photographer as the central character.

Hmm, interesting. About how long was 'years ago'? Twenty years? That can help to narrow the search.

Guess it would have been first published about 20 years ago - it's superb because of the way it draws you in - it's all narrator led and we know he's a horrible and pathetic person but not exactly how bad until the end it's the combination of him being both an unreliable narrator and an arrogant know all that is masterful - when i finished it reread it again immediately - something I've very rarely done YET gave it back to the exchange for discount bookshop without even noting the details - have been kicking myself and wondering why ever since. Tink it may have been a woman writer it would certainly compete with Ruth Rendell at her best and it had that sort of feel tho it wasn't her.

The Last Girl by Penelope Evans sounds like it would fit: "Larry Mann, a lonely old lodger in a north London boarding house, is delighted when Amanda moves in downstairs".
