Force the right cover in series / publisher's series

I would like to be able to force the correct cover for books in a series rather than having the most popular cover for the work.

But what if you like one set of covers and someone else likes another?

Publishers series I can see it, but all copies should belong to regular series, so there the most popular would be the right one.

I think this would be something that would require a finer differentiation on the books (Namely an edition layer that we don't have) in order to truly get it to work.

I don't think it would work. I think it would require greater background coding. But perhaps with the new way that they are working covers now, I might be wrong.
