My late husband had a book pirated in Russian, if that counts for anything.

TPBM knows what counts.

My two year old nephew. He loves to count. He refers to his Mom as "one" and his grandma as "two".

Actually, I was born in South Korea...does that count?

TPBM counts something else.

TPBM is reading a very special book.

I am listening to The Goldfinch on Audible and am reading H is for Hawk and while I don't know if they're special, I think they're both good.

I am currently reading By its Cover by Donna Leon. That is the penultimate book in the Commissario Brunetti series with her latest, Falling in Love, just out and waiting on the shelf. I think her writing is super, great characters and a wonderful sense of location (Venice). She is getting on a bit but shows no sign of flagging: long may she, and Guido and Paola Brunetti, continue.

TPBM has another favourite series they will tell us about, unless they want to take us Off-Topic!

I liked the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series, but as a rule don't usually read too many series (well I did start the Rabbit Run series, but after reading first one am waiting awhile to continue- not sure if I like Rabbit).

TPBM is having trouble getting back into the work groove after an extra day off.

Just read the David Kynaston's Series: Tales of a New Jerusalem about my own boyhood Britain. Each volume is around 850 pages so they were difficult to pick up and impossible to put down!

TPBM is also difficult to put down.

15morningwalker
Sep 8, 2015, 2:31 pm

Hmm...well I've pondered this, and I believe, with gravitational pull and all that, it would be easier to put me down, than to lift me up.

//>13 abbottthomas: My problem is, while I was reading Rabbit Run, I happened upon Rabbit at Rest at a book sale and I bought it thinking it was next in line, only to discover Rabbit Redux is next - so do I now continue the series because I own the 3rd one?Even though I don't like Rabbit I am curious about what happens to him. Should I just put Rabbit Redux in the things to get rid of pile and forget him?? I don't know.//

TPBM solves mysteries.

>15 morningwalker: // Don't forget Rabbit is Rich - Rabbit at Rest is actually number 4. My feeling, for what it is worth, is that if you are curious you should probably stay with it. 28John_Vaughan

//Everything that >27 morningwalker: is offering in the yard sale.//

31PhaedraB
Sep 14, 2015, 3:02 pm

We've been indoctrinated into a consumer mindset where more stuff = better and happier. However, we are instead terrified that we either don't have enough stuff or we don't know what we're supposed to do with the stuff we have.

Cleaning out a loved one's possessions gives you a whole 'nuther perspective on stuff. The moment a person dies, their treasured possessions become just stuff someone else has to deal with. Or you can not deal with it and add to your own accumulation of stuff that someone else will deal with when you die.

TPBM has something cheerful to say on the subject.

32morningwalker
Sep 15, 2015, 9:14 am

Yes, I completely agree with >31 PhaedraB:. I am very careful about bringing more "stuff" into my home (books excluded of course) these days and am trying to be kind to survivors when I die and they have to get rid of everything.

Grilled mozzarella cheese with thinly sliced tomatoes on whole grain bread. Butter, not margarine. Tomatoes fresh from the garden if at all possible. Sloppy and wonderful.

//as a teenager, I babysat for a family from Birmingham, Alabama. they were the first Southerners I remember meeting, although I'm sure other neighbors and schoolkids in my life prior to that were from the South. One day I came over to babysit while the girls (ages 3 and 4) were eating dinner - peanut butter, mayo, and banana sandwiches, open face. I was appalled and the cleanup was worth much more than my $.50/hour rate. I had never heard of anything so strange in my entire life. Mind you, the grandmother who lived with us ate a wedge of lettuce with Miracle Whip and sugar every night with dinner, but to me that was normal. :) )

I had to retire from that hobby 3 or 4 years ago after over 30 years due to all the predators eating everything. When there were 20 gardens in the area they took a little here and a little there. I was the last one around so they all ended up in my garden no matter how tall or deep the fence.

A legend in my own mind! I have had several brushes with "celebrity-types"however. I’ve met and chatted with Farley Mowat, Louise Penny and Jeff Lindsay, and had lunch with John Waters. I was a guest at a small reception where the guests of honour were one of the UK princes & wife. Also, while having dinner at a nice restaurant with a bunch of friends one evening, in walked Daniel Craig who was seated at the table across from us but, since I didn’t know who he was, he doesn’t really count.

TPBM eschews celebrity types.

John Waters, party of 4, your table is ready
The annual International Festival of Authors is a major literary event which runs over 10 days at the end of October in Toronto. I’ve been working at this event for almost 20 years. The last 16-17 years, my job has been to take care of the Hospitality Suite. In 2010, John Waters attended to present Role Models. Shortly after the lunch rush on Wednesday, October 27, 2010, my nephew dropped by because he’d just lost his job and my colleague and I were consoling him while we cleaned up and prepped our own lunch. As we were about to sit down, John Waters arrived. He was hungry. I prepped some food for him. We sat around a coffee table, he sat on the floor, chatted with us and told stories for at least an hour. It was a slow afternoon, no one else came in during that time. That was the day I had lunch with John Waters.

If you're ever in Toronto at the end of October, drop by, we can have lunch and you never know who else might show up :-)

The biker pulled over and said, "Build a bridge to Hawaii so I can ride over anytime I want." God replied, "Your request is materialistic; think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking; the supports required reaching the bottom of the Pacific and the concrete and steel it would take! I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of something that could possibly help mankind." The biker thought about it for a long time. Finally, he said, "God, I wish that I, and all men, could understand women; I want to know how she feels inside, what she's thinking when she gives me the silent treatment, why she cries, what she means when she says nothing's wrong, why she snaps and complains when I try to help, and how I can make a woman truly happy." Well, most of them are so crowded on the shelves, double- and triple-stacked, and crammed in willy nilly (but without hurting their little spines) that they don't need to be dusted per se. Perhaps a row or two on the top, dusted VERY occasionally. Any cleaning activity, when actually undertaken, is enjoyable when one can get instant gratification.

TPBM has some fantastic shelves with glass fronts to prevent having to dust the books.

2362wonderY
Nov 4, 2015, 12:55 pm

Several years back a skunk nested inside my house foundation. The house is 100+ years old and the foundation isn't well done anyway. My plan was to wait till after dark when the critter was theoretically away from home before sealing the entry point. But how can one be sure? The temporary odor of dead beast is still better than a house permanently reeking of skunk.

A happier skunk encounter earlier was when a family nested under an outbuilding. All I had to do that time was leave a hose running water into the space. They promptly packed up and removed the whole family. Raising the shed up another 8 inches kept them from returning, as the underneath was now too exposed for their preference.

TPBM has another tale to tell.

237karenmarie
Edited: Nov 5, 2015, 5:19 am

Short and pungent: Avoid being within 100 yards of skunks making baby skunks. They find the scent attractive, but it's even worse than regular skunk. And the yowling is a surprise, considering how placid they usually look ambling across our yard.

And don't get me started on the dratted groundhogs who climb my chicken-wire-enclosed vegetable garden and eat the green beans.

TPBM has another tale to tell.

317abbottthomas
Nov 20, 2015, 9:44 am

For me, as an Englishman, I suppose that US movies are 'foreign'. They certainly seemed so when I first started to visit the cinema in post-war Britain. Everyone spoke funny and had big shiny cars, or horses. The Wild West and the mean streets of NYC or LA were certainly foreign countries. But assuming that you mean foreign language films, how about Alexander Nevsky ...or The Seven Samurai ...or Jules et Jim ...or, well, lots!

TPBM has subscribed to Sight and Sound or Les Cahiers du Cinéma
