An acquaintance of mine is looking for a book where a British (?) man about his travels through Russia and Central Asia, sometime between the 1930s and the 1960s. The traveler was sort of under the radar, traveling by foot and animal and bus and all sorts of strange ways. He made it all a grand adventure. The acquaintance seems to think it took place during the 50's sometime.

If you have any ideas please let me know.

A few possibles (all a bit earlier than the 50's though):

Travels in Tartary https://www.librarything.com/work/2562395 by Peter Fleming (contains News from Tartary https://www.librarything.com/work/18059)

Eastern Approaches https://www.librarything.com/work/97203 by Fitzroy Maclean

Mission to Tashkent https://www.librarything.com/work/41797 by F. M. Bailey

These are all excellent books, even if not the precise one your acquaintance is looking for.

I've been re-reading Travels in Tartary (prompted by this thread) and it's not the book you're looking for (but still very good).
