hi, my first post here, I'm Francisco from Spain, I hope you excuse my poor English, I'm thinking of reading the Kane books by the great Karl Edward Wagner, but I don't know where to start, which is the best book to start with? since I'm an avid reader of horror and from what I have read in some forums, Death angel's shadow could be the best, isn't it? another thing is difficult the writing of this stories for a non English reader? I have read in English authors like Hemingway, Somerset Maugham, Laird Barron, Joe R Lansdale and by KEW the first volume of his best horror stories Where the summer ends

Thanks in advance

I'm a Wagner fan (reading most recently his Conan novel The Road of Kings), but I haven't read his Kane books. I'll be interested in any answer you receive!

I don't think that the Kane stories have to be read in a specific chronological order. Some books are novels and some, like Death Angel's Shadow are short story collections. Some Kane stories are even set in modern times. I think "Lacunae" might be one of those.

This guy did try to figure out a timeline based on events in Kane's life:

I just picked up a copy of Darkness Weaves, so I'm that much closer to reading some Kane.

Nice to close the loop from your 2021 post!

I'm not motivated to read either Conan or Red Kane but have enjoyed learning something from your reviews of each. I'm piqued again to revisit Elric, however. It might take me a couple years to do that, and suspect these occasional reminders of that intention will push me across the finish line eventually.

@elenchus, I picked up Elric about a year ago after 20 years away. If you are current on Moorcock than I wouldn't worry. After some time away, part of the magic was there but the light faded fast with the writing style for me. I am wary these days of how and when I revisit.

At some point soon, I want to reread The Dreamthief's Daughter so I can continue with The Albino Underground trilogy, which I stalled out on over twenty years ago. It's a crossover Elric/Von Bek series. I liked the first book; I just didn't get back to the others, although I acquired all three volumes.

But the top of my sword-and-sorcery TBR stack is Kothar and the Demon Queen, which I snagged at secondhand just last month.

I've just about all of the Karl Edward Wagner Kane books and short stories. There are only a few of the short stories I haven't read, as for the others, I personally recommend Kane.
