I’m looking for a short story that I read fairly recently, within the past year or so, but I don’t know when it was actually written. I may have read it in a short story collection, or more probably, on the internet.
The story is set in China. Mathematicians are high up on the social scale. I don't remember if they are called mathematicians or something else. A salesman comes to China in order to sell a machine that will put the mathematicians out of work. I can’t remember what the machine is called in the story, but it works like a calculator.
The story is told from the viewpoint of the lead Mathematician and does a good job of describing the life of the people living under the Emperor's rule.
Thanks!
