This is a saga spanning a few generations in England. It details the building of a cathedral in a bishopric.
The same author also wrote a trilogy of 4 families--British, Russian, American, and German. The first book takes place during WWI, the second during WWII, and to third during the Cold War.

Maybe Ken Follett? Certainly The Pillars of the Earth is about building a cathedral. He's written a lot of other books, but I don't know whether those include the World War trilogy you seek.
