All of my challenges for 2016:
(And since several of them have similar choices, eg published this year, etc, I'm allowing myself to scratch off 1 choice per category. So, let's say I read The Holy Bible--hahaha! ok, seriously, pretend time--I can scratch off #21 A book recommended by a family member, #48 A banned book, and A) A book with an APOCALYPTICAL theme. It's debatable whether it would fit in the horror category, but I'm the boss of my books, so I say no, it's not horror. So neener-neener. ;)

Thank you for setting up the 2016 group! I was very quiet in 2015; joining very late and using the group/my thread more as an index than actively participating; but I hope to be more engaged in 2016! :-)

>6 Tanya-dogearedcopy: You're so welcome! :) And we'd love to see around the threads. But I have to warn you: they can be very addictive (keeping up on other people's threads, that is :). Anyway, happy reading and Happy New Year!

Also, congrats for reading 300 books last year! :)

I actually found the comments to that video funnier than the guy. LOL @ "I found this hard to masterbate to." Yes, as did I. o.0
And, guessing my ass off here, I think it's ok to give/receive/practice sneaky handjobs, as long as the person is aware of what's going to happen, but pretends to be asleep or is even ok to taking sleeping pills. Whatever floats your boat. *remembers to chug RockStars so she never sleeps*

4 by Danzig
Tags: metal, cd
Rating:
Track Listing: 1 Brand New God, 2 Little Whip, 3 Cantspeak, 4 Going Down to Die, 5 Until You Call on the Dark, 6 Dominion, 7 Bringer of Death, 8 Sadistikal, 9 Son of the Morning Star, 10 I Don't Mind the Pain, 11 Stalker Song, 12 Let It Be Captured, 13-65 {silence}, 66 Invocation.
Note(s): "Cantspeak" is probably my favorite--and possibly my first--Danzig song (I was about 15 when I heard it). 4's certainly more mellow and depressing than some of the metal bands/albums I've listened to, which isn't a negative thing. It was a good CD to slowly wake up to at work today. Vaguely reminded me of The Doors for some strange reason.

101 Elephant Jokes by Robert Blake
Tags: fiction, juvenile, humor, picture book, animals, elephants, jokes, quizzes
Rating:
Pages: 96
Synopsis: So you think you know elephant jokes? Well, this is to show you that you don't! Do your friends laugh at you and run the other way when they see you coming? If so, you've got to get into the swing of things. In other words, you've got to know EVERY ONE of these nutty elephant jokes that are sweeping the nation. I can say that my friends don't laugh at me! Why should they? I know all these elephant jokes! And why shouldn't I? I AM AN ELEPHANT! (Please don't laugh at the pictures. They're my portraits!)
Note(s): Honestly, the only reason I bought this one was to finish one of my category requirements (A book with an ELEPHANT in the title), and, of course, because I thought it would be fun. "Thought" being the operative word. Maybe 50+ years ago when this was published, it was funny, but most everyone's heard Q: How do you stop a herd of elephants from charging? A: Take away their credit cards! by now. I didn't laugh once at any of the jokes, though the quiz at the end was amusing:
Where's D. All the above?? :P I did find it interesting that this compilation of jokes was done by a 14-year-old at the time. Goes to show you don't necessarily need talent to be published.
*Surprisingly, after all these years, that's how much this book was--25¢!

The book was downright terrible (though it's going for over $89.58 on Amazon--why??). I like bad, low-brow jokes sometimes (ok, most of the time), but these weren't remotely funny. So I'm releasing that one to the wild. Maybe somebody else will get a kick out of it. But more importantly, hopefully I'll make some money off it. ;)

Note(s): You would think with a few dozen songs/bands, the rating would've been higher on this compilation, but no. In This Moment was what caught my eye, but "The Great Divide" isn't one of my favorite songs by them, so that was a letdown, as was a lot of these songs. Still, I think I might keep it when I need to hear something loud and harsh. Until then, I'm boxing it away.

The Darkness #21: Wyrmwood, Part 1 by Malachy Coney
Tags: fiction, horror, monsters, new york, comic book, series, the darkness
Rating:
Pages: 23
Synopsis: On his 21st birthday, mafia hitman Jackie Estacado is both blessed and cursed when he becomes the latest bearer of The Darkness, an ancient force that allows its bearer access to an otherworldly dimension and the demons who dwell there. Forces for good in the world rise up to face Jackie and the evil his gift represents, but there is one small problem. In this story... they are the bad guys.
Note(s): I knew nothing about this series when I bought this comic, other than it was horror, on sale, and there were some so-creepy-they're-cute demon monsters in it. I thought the chick on the front would be more in the story, but she's basically the bait at the beginning to get Jackie to look for Wyrmwood. Interesting story; I'll definitely look for the other comic books in this series; but I loved the illustrations the best. Without all the glossy photos and blood and gore, I doubt I would've liked it as much.

Hm, maybe the book is really rare? That's not to say that it is good, but I know even outdated technology can jump in price, if it isn't being manufactured anymore. *Shrug*

I also like Meshuggah, Kataklysm, All Shall Perish, and Aborted. :)

I think the elephant joke book is pretty rare. I think it was printed in the 50's or 60's, but still...it's crap! Who would buy it? Well, maybe people from that era and want it for nostalgia. People probably think the same about me when I buy crappy girl series from childhood. So I think I just answered my "who would buy it?" question. ;)
Did you want me to rip some or all of the songs from the Metal for the Masses CD? Let me know, and I can upload those for you. :)

Never Cry Werewolf directed by Brenton Spencer
Tags: horror, werewolves, dvd, NR
Rating:
Synopsis: Everyone thinks he's the perfect guy. But 16-year-old Loren (Nina Dobrev) knows the truth about her handsome, new neighbor Jared (Peter Stebbings)--that he's really a werewolf. When Loren can't get anybody to believe her, she turns to television action star Redd Tucker (Kevin Sorbo), determined to expose the truth before more victims fall prey to the blood-thirsty monster.
Note(s): Never Cry Werewolf: think a pedophile/werewolf version of Fright Night (one of my favorite 80's horror flicks I wasn't allowed to see as a kid--but did). The beginning 1/3 or so was really good, and I enjoyed the bits of humor thrown in. I dropped it a star, though, after some bad cgi scenes and cliched lines--(summarized) Girl: "I think I heard something." Boy: "Relax. We're the only ones out here." T minus 10 seconds before intestines hit the ground. Cheesiness included, I still liked it. Recommended if you like werewolf movies.

My Fair Lady: A Musical Play in Two Acts by Alan Jay Lerner
Tags: fiction, screenplay, musical, movie tie-in, historical, england
Rating:
Pages: 128
Synopsis: Outside Covent Garden on a rainy evening in 1912, cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, meets linguistic expert Henry Higgins. Higgins, in turn, bets with his companion, Colonel Pickering, that, within six months, he could transform Eliza into a proper lady, simply by teaching her proper English. The next morning, face and hands freshly scrubbed, Eliza presents herself on Higgins' doorstep, ready and willing to be turned into a lady.
Note(s): I had bought this last year to complete part of the challenge in >1 saraslibrary:, but never got around to it. Now read, I want to watch the movie all over again. Normally, I don't like musicals, plays, etc, but I saw My Fair Lady as a child and fell in love with it. I was also going through an Audrey Hepburn phase around that time and was watching everything she was in. Out of the two (this book and the movie), I still prefer the movie, though I highly recommend this if you're a fan of the movie or play.

Adore directed by Anne Fontaine
Tags: drama, romance, friendship, beach, sydney, australia, surfing, based on book, dvd, R
Rating:
Synopsis: A pair of childhood friends and neighbors fall for each other's sons.
Note(s): Adore was kind of on the long side for me, even though it was shy of 2 hours. That's why I dropped it a star. But it is naughty fun, unless you really think about it (best friends basically swapping sons as lovers), then it makes you cringe--or at least it made me cringe once or twice when I really thought about it. The lesbian subtext was funny at least. I really like tragic romances, so this one hit the spot, even though nobody dies at the end; they just find new lovers, go their separate ways, etc . I never understood how most of them could accept everything so well--divorces, remarriage, and so on--but I still loved this one. It was a great impulse buy. Lots of eye candy.

Note(s): Wth was I smoking putting this on hold? 1) I don't like opera. 2) I don't like opera. 3) I don't...yeah, you get the idea. But listen to it all, I did, because the instrumentals for it weren't half-bad; it was just the nonsensical singing I couldn't tolerate. To each their own, I guess. For me, I need a chocolate bar after work to get the taste out of my ears.

Bound to Vengeance directed by J. M. Cravioto
Tags: horror, kidnapping, revenge, california, dvd, NR
Rating:
Synopsis: A young girl, chained in the basement of a sexual predator, escapes and turns the tables on her captor.
Note(s): Intense, fast-paced, and disturbing. The last scene is open-ended, which was mildly frustrating. I still had so many questions throughout the movie, likewas her boyfriend the kidnapper/scout/seller/whatever you would call him ? Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The ending revelation about the girl's other kidnapped roommate is heart-breaking. Highly recommended. Worth an immediate rewatch, which I'll probably do after work tonight, just to see if I can answer my own questions.

The Snow Rabbit by Camille Garoche
Tags: fiction, juvenile, picture book, winter, animals, rabbits, woods, siblings, physically handicapped, wordless, checked out from work
Rating:
Pages: 56
Synopsis: Two sisters look longingly through their window at the snowy sky. One goes out and sculpts a little rabbit, but when she brings it back inside to her wheelchair-bound sister, it begins to melt. So they take it outside and into the forest where enchanted things begin to happen. A follow up to her hauntingly beautiful Fox’s Garden, Camille Garoche (a.k.a. Princesse Camcam) mounts paper cut scenes into dioramas that are then meticulously lit and photographed, lending the illustrations depth and heightened drama. Steeped in subtle detail and unspoken emotion, The Snow Rabbit is a book to cherish.
Note(s): The synopsis provided by the book says it all. My second Camille Garoche/Princesse Camcam book.

Synopsis: After surviving a gang rape and mugging, a middle aged businesswoman and her 23 year old boyfriend plot to murder their attackers, but find themselves conflicted about carrying out their plans.
Note(s): Engrossing; one of the few movies I've had the time--or interest--to watch in one sitting. I did have a problem with the animal killings, however; that's why I gave this one a 4. And the last scene I didn't understand whatsoever. Otherwise it was great. It's been on my wishlist for the longest time; years now.

Note(s): I liked the movie better than this soundtrack, though there are some fun favorites, like Colin Farrell's cover of "I Fought the Law", "Scooby Snacks" by Fun Lovin' Criminals, and "I Don't Want to Get Over You" by Magnetic Fields (one of the most depressing songs ever, but I still love it). Too bad "Loverboy" by Billy Ocean wasn't included. It was one of the funnier dating scenes that it played in. Anyway, this CD is totally skippable, but I'd recommend the movie.

Tags: suspense, romance, stalking, los angeles, california, teachers, dvd, R
Rating:
Synopsis: A recently cheated on married woman falls for a younger man who has moved in next door, but their torrid affair soon takes a dangerous turn.
Note(s): Sometimes I wish I'd pay attention to bad reviews than buy a movie hoping, just hoping, that all those people were wrong. They weren't wrong; it's bad. But I just liked the idea of the movie. Too bad there's no chemistry between the two, and pretty much all the characters are annoying as hell. I will give them a thumbs up for making me go "ew" at least once, and at an appropriate scene, too--Jennifer Lopez shoves a digit--maybe her thumb; who knows; I'm not replaying it to find out--in Ryan Guzman's left eye . No matter how much it sucked, I'm still keeping it. Maybe it'll get better over time...? *tries not to laugh*

As with most soundtracks, I liked the score better than the pop version. I'd recommend that one (which I listened to last year) over this one, unless you're a fan of all the bands on here, then ignore this. :) Now I just need to grow some patience for season 1 to show up....

Note(s): I remember watching this cartoon as a kid, as well as reading and owning this book. Eventually, as a teen, I did a major haul through my books and got rid of most of them, including this one. So when I stumbled across it at work this week during one of our ongoing book sales, I was eager to re-own/read it. Weirdness: the previous owner had the same name as me (scribbled on the inside page), different spelling though.

Wreck This Journal by Keri Smith
Tags: nonfiction, diaries, humor, writing, artists
Rating:
Pages: 224
Synopsis: For anyone who's ever wished to, but had trouble starting, keeping, or finishing a journal or sketchbook comes Wreck This Journal, an illustrated book that features a subversive collection of prompts, asking readers to muster up their best mistake- and mess-making abilities to fill the pages of the book (and destroy them). Acclaimed illustrator Keri Smith encourages journalers to engage in "destructive" acts-poking holes through pages, adding photos and defacing them, painting with coffee, and more-in order to experience the true creative process. Readers discover a new way of art and journal making-and new ways to escape the fear of the blank page and fully engage in the creative process.
Note(s): I absolutely loved the idea for this book! However, I don't think I was exactly the intended audience, even though it's jokingly dedicated to perfectionists all over the world. I just can't bring myself to do half these things to a book--"Tongue Painting: 1. Eat some colorful candy. 2. Lick this page.", "Document your dinner. Rub, smear, splatter your food. Use this page as a napkin.", "Collect dead bugs here." etc. Maybe I still will have a go at this journal, but after I Xerox the pages first. :P

Dark House directed by Victor Salva

Rating:
Synopsis: When Nick Di Santo learns that his father is not only alive but can possibly reveal the origin of his son's dark gift, he sets out on a trip that takes him to an abandoned mansion he thought only existed in his childhood imagination.
Note(s): I could not get into this one, for some strange reason. Too bad, too, because it sounded good, but it went off into some weird demonic direction. Yes, I was expecting a supernatural movie, just not how this one turned out. At least Luke Kleintank made it watchable.

The Child I Never Was = Ein Leben lang kurze Hosen tragen directed by Kai S. Pieck
Tags: drama, suspense, foreign, germany, gay, based on book, dvd, NR
Rating:
Synopsis: Fictionalized account of Jürgen Bartsch, a German boy who became notorious in the 1960's after his conviction for the serial killings and sexual molestation of a number of young German boys. Told partly as recreation and partly as taped confession.
Note(s): Rarely do I watch an entire movie in one sitting, but this one was very engrossing and relatively short (83 minutes). It isn't told in strict chronological order, so I wasn't sure of how many murder/molestation victims he had until I googled him later. (Answer: four murdered victims; the fifth escaped, resulting in his arrest. No number of molested victims found.) Highly recommended. It vaguely reminded me of Swoon, a movie I saw as a teen involving two gay men who kill a young boy (based on true events).

The Only Child by Guojing
Tags: fiction, juvenile, picture book, fantasy, wordless, animals, deer, whales, winter, checked out from work
Rating:
Pages: 112
Synopsis: Like Shaun Tan's The Arrival and Raymond Briggs's The Snowman, this gorgeous and imaginative 100-page graphic picture book is utterly transporting and original. A little girl—lost and alone—follows a mysterious stag deep into the woods, and, like Alice down the rabbit hole, she finds herself in a strange and wondrous world. But . . . home and family are very far away. How will she get back there? In this magnificently illustrated—and wordless—masterpiece, debut artist Guojing brilliantly captures the rich and deeply-felt emotional life of a child, filled with loneliness and longing as well as love and joy.
Note(s): I'm not a big fan of wordless books, because there's so much left out of the story, eg, I had no idea the young child is a girl (I thought "she" was a he, not that it really matters), until I re-read the author's note and synopsis. I did love the black-and-white artwork, though.

Elephants Never Forget #2: Big Top Otto by Bill Slavin
Tags: fiction, juvenile, graphic novel, circus, animals, elephants, parrots, monkeys, series, elephants never forget, georgia
Rating:
Pages: 88
Synopsis: Otto the elephant continues his search for his childhood friend Georgie, a chimpanzee who was abducted from their forest home in Africa and shipped to the wilds of America by the Man with the Wooden Nose. When Otto sees a circus poster with a chimp that looks just like Georgie, he and his parrot friend, Crackers, follow the trail of the traveling circus. Along the way, they crash a football game, steal a peanut-shaped car and get thrown in jail. Will Otto and Crackers find Georgie? Or will trouble find them first? Big Top Otto is the second book in the Elephants Never Forget series chronicling the hilarious adventures of the tenacious pachyderm, Otto, and his wisecracking parrot pal, Crackers. Told with gentle humor and lots of visual gags, this series is an action-packed celebration of friendship and perseverance. Following a lead about his missing friend Georgie, Otto and his sidekick Crackers set out to investigate Punkratz and Pinky Traveling Circus.
Note(s): The synopsis says it all--plenty of action and a super fast read. At first, I didn't think I'd have time to finish it tonight, but it's very fast-paced. Even though I'm reading it out of sequence, I wasn't confused at all. I'm eager to read the other two books in this series.

Not sure how this is supposed to work. But I have the goal of reading 240 books this year. That is 24 per month of which 16 are my standard Harlequin romances. I usually read these in one weekend! That leaves 8 books in addition. At least one of those will be about history and one on self-improvement. What I do not know is -- Can these be re-reads of books I have owned a long time that will be leaving me as soon as I have re-read them - due to space limitation????

Rainbow Crow: Nagweyaabi-Aandeg by David Bouchard
Tags: fiction, juvenile, folklore, native americans, canada, u.s., picture book, nature, animals, crows, bears, birds, eagles, wolves, partial foreign, read along, ambient, cd, checked out from work
Rating:
Pages: 32
Synopsis: Before two-leggeds walked on Mother Earth there was a great cold. The animals formed a council; someone had to seek help from the Creator. Rainbow Crow, a most colorful bird, was selected because he had a beautiful voice that would surely impress the Creator. He flew into the heavens and won fire from above. But on the way back the fire began to burn his plumage black and destroy his beautiful voice. But Rainbow Crow persevered, bringing the life-saving fire safely back to his friends.
Note(s): I love crows, so I was automatically drawn to this book. I'm not too crazy about audiobooks or read-alongs (which this is), but it was so short, I figured why not? David Bouchard is an excellent narrator; he has a nice voice and shows emotion while storytelling, not just talking monotonously for 15+ minutes a go. I loved the Native American music playing in the background, as well as at the end of each track. (I believe the song's called "Tatanka" by Manantial.) I even listened to all three versions of the story--in English, Ojibwe, and French--and tried to read the Ojibwe half of the book, which was an excellent touch. (Bouchard narrates the English and French versions; Jason Jones narrates the Ojibwe version.)

I even listened to all three versions of the story--in English, Ojibwe, and French--and tried to read the Ojibwe half of the book, which was an excellent touch. (Bouchard narrates the English and French versions; Jason Jones narrates the Ojibwe version.)

Track Listing: 1 Apoptygma Berzerk - Coma White, 2 Haujobb - Speed Of Pain, 3 Razed In Black - Cake And Sodomy, 4 Mindless Faith - I Don't Like The Drugs (But The Drugs Like Me), 5 Hate Dept. - The Reflecting God, 6 The Electric Hellfire Club - Get Your Gun, 7 Imperious Rex - Disposable Teens, 8 Fred Coury - New Model, No. 15, 9 Dead Girls Corp. - Man That You Fear, 10 Maya Hyena - Great Big White World, 11 Doll Factory - Lunch Box, 12 Aleister Einstein - The Beautiful People, 13 Pure Drama - Mechanical Animals.
Note(s): I liked several of the bands on here and like Marilyn Manson fairly well, but it all didn't add up for me. A lot of the original versions I don't remember, so I couldn't really compare them. I had heard "Coma White" by Apoptygma Berzerk before and forgot it was actually a M.M. cover. So far, I don't think anyone's been able to cover M.M. very well; however, M.M.'s been able to cover songs perfectly ("Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)", "Personal Jesus", etc).

Note(s): I think I was more shocked my rating for this CD averaged out so low than I was disappointed by this album. It's not terrible, but it's definitely not worth 5 stars, like all the other Mindless Self Indulgence CDs I own. It is one of their newer albums, so maybe that's why I didn't like it as much? (Some bands have to take awhile to really hone their sound.)

Note(s): I almost feel guilty giving yet another Mindless Self Indulgence CD 3 stars, because I like the band, but there it is. Maybe I need to listen to this and the above CD a few more times and let them grow on me, but for now: 3 stars. "JX-47" and "I Think I Turned 22" reminded me so much of Adam Sandler's stuff. I was trying not to laugh, because 1) Jimmy Urine (the singer) was imitating a mentally challenged person a little too well, and 2) I was at work and I have a very cranky, nitpicking reference librarian I have the "joy" of working with. As always, though, great, mad-crazy lyrics that'll make you laugh at least once, if you have a sense of humor, that is. Not as profane as some of their other albums; thus no parental advisory sticker on this one. Obviously.

The Rats by James Herbert
Tags: fiction, horror, animals, rats, london, england, made into movie, series, the rats
Rating:
Pages: 208
Synopsis: For millions of years man and rats had been natural enemies. But now for the first time—suddenly, shockingly, horribly—the balance of power had shifted and the rats began to prey on the human population.
Note(s): Really, rats are my natural enemy? *tries not to laugh* On the contrary. I've had them as pets, and though I don't like their destructiveness, I don't kill them. (I have Havahart traps for that.) But anyway, from the beginning of this book, I was rooting for the rats. I usually do any time I read/watch a man vs. beast book or movie. Not surprisingly, I didn't like the animal cruelty, like when a team of scientists feed infected puppies to the killer rats; or even when the rats attack caged animals at a zoo. But that wasn't the main reason why I gave this book 3 stars. That was because it was rather boring (I felt no urgency to get through this one; it all seemed so predictable), and there were way too many characters. New ones were introduced almost every chapter, so it was hard to connect with any of them, because a lot of them ended up as rat food. One constant character is a school teacher, who I had no feelings for one way or the other. I found it implausible he would be called in to help fight the rats, since "they" had better resources (police, scientists, politicians, exterminators, etc). I won't give the end away, but let's just say it still kind of tempts me to try the two sequels...but only if I find really, really cheap copies. Still, I would not recommend this one. I'd recommend watching Willard instead. (I haven't read the book that one was based on, so I can't say if it's any good.)

Silver Linings Playbook directed by David O. Russell
Tags: drama, humor, romance, psychology, based on book, pennsylvania, baltimore, maryland, dvd, R
Rating:
Synopsis: After a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own.
Note(s): I couldn't get into this one. It took about one week for me to watch it all. Maybe I just wasn't in a romance/drama mood; maybe it was too long (just over 2 hours). But I liked the cast at least, even if I couldn't get over the 15-year age gap between Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Hopefully I'll like the book better.

I think the difference is I wouldn't consider it rape if I was willing. It's more like being force-fed cookies to death. I mean sure, it's still death, but...cookies!
That's not to say I'm not sympathetic to rape victims though. For example, as a straight guy, getting anally penetrated would definitely be rape, and something I would refer to avoid. I think more guys would be understanding of women who are date raped if they could imagine a scenario in which they get drunk at a party and wake up to the fact that they were anally raped by a gay man while they were passed out. The next time you hear a guy being a douche about that particular topic, just pitch that scenario to him and maybe it'll open his eyes a bit. -.-

>136 Ape: Oh, yeah, I forgot that saying, something like, "You can't rape the willing." That was said a lot when I was tween, and I hate to admit it, but I probably said it, too. *facepalm*
I think I'll pass on the force-feeding, even if it's cookies. Reminds me too much of Se7en, and this movie that's been in my TBW pile: Feed, something about people who cannibalize large-sized people. o.0 Yeah, I'm into weird movies, if you haven't discovered that by now.
Yeah, I think most people are sympathetic to rape victims, crude, insensitive jokes aside (including myself here). And yeah, any straight and/or homophobic guy who gets that example given to him might rethink certain things said about women asking for it. Heck, I've had some women who know better say the same cruel things, eg, women ask for it if they wear a skirt; husbands can't rape wives, it's still sex; blatty blah blah. But anyway, douchebags: there are tons of them out there, male or female!
Oh! It just popped in my head about anal rapes. Even women can rape men anally, as seen in Closure, a movie I saw in >63 saraslibrary:--and with a gun. o.0 That was a new one for me.

Marnie the Dog: I'm a Book by Shirley Braha
Tags: nonfiction, photography, humor, animals, dogs, checked out from work
Rating:
Pages: 144
Synopsis: Once an old, sick dog who was found on the streets and named "Stinky," Marnie the Dog got a second lease on life when she was adopted from a shelter at age ten. Soon, her signature looks and endearing personality would capture the hearts of not only her new owner, but nearly everyone she encountered. After photos and videos of Marnie started circulating online, Marnie began charming millions over the world. Whether you're a dog or human, Marnie proves it's never too late to start a new chapter of your life and live it to the fullest. Using a sophisticated creative process compromised of unlimited treats and lots of love, Marnie and her human companion have created their first book of never-before-seen photos--and a few classics, too.
Note(s): Thanks to Jennifer for reading this one and making me go, "Aawww, I need to ILL that one ASAP." It's kind of in the spirit of Boo: The Life of the World's Cutest Dog by J. H. Lee (one I'd also recommend), except Marnie's, oh, a year or two older--*wink wink*--than Boo and, depending on who you ask, not as cute. Personally, I've had a Shih Tzu mix and currently have a Pomeranian, so I can't say one's cuter than the other. I do feel bad giving this book a 4, but the text wasn't all that funny. The photos of Marnie, however, I loved! :) Ideal for those who like seeing older shelter dogs have a happy life.

Yeah, the "asking for it" thing is something that REALLY irritates me.
See, the issue for me is that I'm not very sympathetic towards people who do stupid things when they are drunk. People drink and do stupid things, and when a woman says she went out partying and got raped I'm about as interested as when someone gets drunk and gets in a car accident, or a fight. You got drunk and you did something stupid, THAT is definitely your fault.
...BUT when people say someone was asking to be raped because they were dressed sexily...well, no, I don't think they were asking for that. Not an okay thing to say.
I should note that women who pass out and get raped are definitely rape victims. The issue with drunk people is you don't know who blacked out when. If a man and a woman black out, and wake up naked together...well, no, sorry, you both got drunk and neither person is more or less guilty than the other. It probably sounds harsh, but I don't have a high tolerance of drunken stupidity.

>142 Ape: It irritates me, too, because I had a family member say that exact thing. So I shot back something about all those little kids who are walking around in their diapers or swimsuits, whatever, are asking for it because they're barely dressed. That made that person rethink what she said. But I know deep down, she still believes women "ask for it."
I'm not very sympathetic either when people know something could happen but still do it. However, when I was in high school, I strongly recommended my girl friends to drink with only other girls. It made sense to them when I explained it, and some of them did that, if they decided to drink. Other people who said they were going to drink around me (say my sister, for instance, but this was when she was an adult), I told them if they got plastered, they just gave me permission to make a jackass out of them, ie, shave their eyebrows, etc.
And speaking of drunk stupidity, I almost have a mind to go to my manager's retirement party at some get-drunk-and-stupid place and bring a camera. Because you just know something bad is going to be said! Plus it'll give me a chance to shave eyebrows and heads. :P
>143 Ape: Seriously? Cool. :) We just reordered it at work, and it just came in this past week.

Synopsis: They come in small packages and as the photos show, they pack a lot of adorableness per pound. They're "Lightweights"--small puppies on big antique scales, an irresistible photo gift book from the author of the popular Dogtionary and Cationary.
Note(s): I liked this better than the other book I own by Sharon Montrose, Cationary. Very adorable, beautifully-shot photos that'll make your heart melt.

The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack by Sixx:A.M.

Track Listing: 1 "X-Mas in Hell", 2 "Van Nuys", 3 "Life Is Beautiful", 4 "Pray for Me", 5 "Tomorrow", 6 "Accidents Can Happen", 7 "Intermission", 8 "Dead Man's Ballet", 9 "Heart Failure", 10 "Girl with Golden Eyes", 11 "Courtesy Call", 12 "Permission", 13 "Life After Death".
Note(s): Despite "soundtrack" in the title, this isn't a soundtrack to some movie you've never heard of. It's apparently an accompaniment to the bassist's autobiography, The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star. Thank you, Wikipedia. :) I've never been a Mötley Crüe fan, but this was a great new-to-me band. I really enjoyed this CD, especially the first track, with perfectly creepy Christmas music in the background. As noted above, all the songs have heroin-heavy lyrics, which I couldn't really relate to, but I liked the honesty, because I have had a family member really into serious street drugs.

EastEnders: Who's Who by Kate Lock
Tags: nonfiction, series, eastenders, tv tie-in, england, reference
Rating:
Pages: 128
Synopsis: This definitive guide to the main characters who have appeared in EastEnders since the mid-1980s hopes to satisfy even the most fanatical EastEnders addicts desire for information about their favourite characters. This full colour "dictionary" of characters traces dirty deeds, relationships and a plethora of other occurrences. If you want to know answers to questions like why was Terry Raymond forced to give up drinking, when is Nick Cotton's birthday, whatever happened to the Tavernier family?, then this reference is all you need.
Note(s): This one took me considerably longer to read than I expected, not because it was super long or super boring (negative on both those things; in fact, some characters only got half a page or less, with their mug taking up most of the space--great if it was one of the hotties :P); but because I was constantly flipping between characters, trying to remember how they were connected. Oh, how I wish it were a website or ebook, so links could be incorporated. Also, I was busy youtubing old EastEnders episodes--fun! Believe me, I was utterly heartbroken when my PBS station stopped airing EastEnders (I was hooked during the late '90s/early '00s), so this was the perfect trip down memory lane.

Embrace of the Vampire directed by Carl Bessai
Tags: horror, vampires, college, dreams, lesbians, fencing, remake, dvd, NR
Rating:
Synopsis: Sharon Hinnendael stars as Charlotte, a timid and sheltered teen who has just left an all-girls Catholic school for a new life at a co-ed university. But an ancient evil has followed her here, tormenting her with disturbing nightmares and tempting her with forbidden desires. It is a hunger that can only be satiated by sensual pleasures of the flesh...and a thirst for blood. It's a battle for her soul... and one she's losing. But Charlotte is a fighter. The chaos and torment threatens to unleash her own inner beast, and anyone even close to her may find themselves embracing their own horrific fate.
Note(s): Not as bad as I was expecting. I read a lot of bad reviews about this one before buying it, but still bought it, because I love vampire movies and kind of enjoyed the original version enough to want to see how this one ended up. Even though it's been a year since I saw the original, I can't really compare the two; my memory's that bad. There's still the lesbian overtones (that I remembered), if that's your thing; but personally, I loved the sexual tension Charlotte had with her mythology teacher/fencing coach, played by Victor Webster. Seriously, can you blame her?And he's a vampire to boot, so double hot.

Hideyuki Kikuchi's Vampire Hunter D Manga: Volume 1 by Saiko Takaki
Tags: fiction, juvenile, manga, horror, sci fi, vampires, dhampir, werewolves, robots, lamias, monsters, based on book, series, vampire hunter d
Rating:
Pages: 250
Synopsis: The mysterious D is a vampire hunter, one of those who protect the ordinary humans against the alliance of mutants and the race of vampires known as the Nobility, in the distant future of 12,090 A.D.
Note(s): I loved the plethora of monsters in this one, everything from robot horses to golems to the dhampir protagonist. And even though I'm not a fan of westerns, I liked the mix of genres--sci fi/fantasy, horror, and western, with a little romance thrown in between a human woman and Vampire D. I had actually started watching the anime movie years back, but never finished it; but at least it gave me an idea of what the story was about. And I just recently started the novel this manga was based on for a horror challenge, and, so far, I liked that the manga was fairly close to the book. Recommended if you're into horror mangas and/or are a fan of Vampire Hunter D.
ETA: I forgot to mention why I gave this a 4. The action sequences were confusing. I honestly didn't know if someone was injured, what weapon--if any--was being used, etc.

Well, I think the word "terrorist" gets thrown around in the same way that "communist" was in the 1900's. I get aggravated whenever I hear mass shooters or criminals in general being referred to as terrorists. But it's the trend pop-culture word that captivates the audience and writes the checks for those in the media, so there you go. *Shrug*
181saraslibrary
I think it does, too. It's like the new buzz word. Not that I don't think there aren't terrorists out there; I just think it's blown (no pun intended) out of proportion. And, no, mass shooters/criminals aren't terrorists, imho. Wackos, sure, but rarely are they motivated by politics, so that doesn't make them the T word.
Not one sexual innuendo in that topic. Micky would be proud. ;)

Spilling Open: The Art of Becoming Yourself by Sabrina Ward Harrison
Tags: nonfiction, autobiography, artists, diaries, self-help, california, coming of age, psychology
Rating:
Pages: 176
Synopsis: Readers of both genders and all generations will find timeless innocence and age-old wisdom in the scrawling, sprawling words of Sabrina Ward Harrison. The format here is a personal journal in which Harrison allows readers to be privy to her colorful pages of free-flowing collages, photographs, and wildly handwritten words. Harrison explores many of the typical questions, confusions, and insights that accompany the journey from adolescence to womanhood. At times her angst feels a tad clichéd ("I am afraid to show you who I really am, because if I show you who I really am, you might not like it--and that's all I got."), but her gutsy presentation and honesty make her words feel fresh and hard-earned, especially in passages such as this:
Harrison is a gifted writer with an inspiring amount of heart-on-her-sleeve honesty. She even has the maturity to quote two of the big Ws--Walt Whitman and Woody Allen--with equal panache. But more importantly, she earns her readers' trust and hearts. As a result, Harrison is a woman to watch and a writer to follow.
Note(s): A few things I could relate to in this pictorial diary of sorts (self-acceptance, loneliness, etc); but mostly I found it messy and vague. I really had to study each page, because some of the sentences are written in the creases, upside down, etc etc. I mainly read this one to scratch off "A book with an ORANGE cover," but it also earned "A book that made you cry" to be scratched off. It didn't make me bawl, but it brought around some memories that made me misty-eyed. I think artists might like this one a little better than I did.

I think God leaves me alone to let me find my own strength because no one else can give it to me. Sometimes it is very lonely. But I know the lonely times teach me the most. I must let go in order to let anything in. No one can love me, for me. Take a big walk protected in the trees. I miss the time before today.

New York Jackie: Pictures from Her Life in the City edited by Bridget Watson Payne
Tags: nonfiction, photography, historical, biography, new york, checked out from work
Rating:
Pages: 160
Synopsis: As familiar as we are with images of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the charming former first lady, fewer know the dynamic woman who called New York City home. Shortly after JFK's assassination in 1964, Jackie moved to Manhattan and lived there for the next three decades. This intimate collection of photographs celebrates her life in the city as a mother, book editor, style icon, and most of all, a New Yorker. Eating ice cream with her kids on Fifth Avenue, working with authors at Doubleday Books, riding her bike through Central Park—these images capture the real-life joy, creative passion, and effortless grace of New York Jackie.
Note(s): I know very little about Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, nor am I really big fan or anything. But I liked how brief the book was; and I especially liked the black-and-white photographs the best.

Synopsis: Tyler Davidson invites his college buddy Chase home for the summer holidays and a secret is revealed that threatens to tear his perfect family apart. When Tyler's mother, Stacey discovers her husband Nathan in an unspeakable affair, the Davidson family's world begins to collapse. The summer is ripe with adventure, revelations, and betrayal as this family learns how to laugh, cry and love again.
Note(s): I thought the movie would've had more sex scenes, going by this dvd cover and the synopsis/reviews I read. Nope. I should've gone by my dvd's cover (shown above). Very Family Channel-ish, if you didn't know it was gay-themed. It was all very toned down, though the two having the affair were pretty hot. Another reason for the 4 was that everything seemed too neat and resolved by the end, though Tyler and Chase's let's-be-friends-from-a-distance stance seemed more realistic. Tyler seemed too macho to accept Chase or his own father. Even though I didn't think about it until now, I'm kind of glad they had a scene at the end of the credits with Chase getting on the bus instead of getting a ride from, say, Tyler's "liberated" gay dad, though that would've been more fun . And I've got to wonder if the director's name is really Chip Dale; it's too hilariously close to Chippendales.

Synopsis: Three generations of a wealthy Bordeaux family are caught in the crossfire when Anne decides to run for mayor, thanks to a political pamphlet that revives an old murder scandal.
Note(s): I think I checked this one out years ago, but I may not have watched it, because while "rewatching" it, it didn't ring any bells. So I'm guessing it was like most of my checkouts--it made it as far as my work locker until it was due back. The movie felt longer than it actually was (101 minutes), probably because most of it revolves around a small-town election and politics. *yawn* The reason I bought it was for the scandalous incest part of the movie involving two cousins (or were they step-siblings? I was never quite clear on that), one played by Benoît Magimel, who I've seen in several other French films, The Piano Teacher being one of my favorites he was in. Mélanie Doutey is incredibly beautiful, so they were a wonderful pair to watch. The sex/romantic scenes, however, were surprisingly mild. Most R/NR-rated European movies have at least one or two people walking around naked or half-naked for no reason at all. That's what I love about European movies. This one, again, didn't have that, so I was a little bummed. And it took forever for the murder to occur, not until the last 15 minutes or so. And even that was handled quite oddly.Actually, not at all by the authorities. The movie ends with them celebrating the step-mom's electoral win and leaving the body where it is. So again: looong movie. Good movie still. I especially liked the older aunt character, Aunt Line (Suzanne Flon).

It was a lot of work finding that picture. You know how rare it is to find a picture of a lady with a mouthful of semen that doesn't have breasts or a penis? I had to look through dozens of pictures, it was a lot of hard work! ...so to speak...

And in consistency with "Meanwhile in...": Meanwhile in the Twilight state, library staff are getting hammered in the men's bathroom. :P Not really. This was found in our men's public restroom. Surprised? Not at all. In my usual poor taste, I laughed, mainly because I didn't have to clean it up and this place is...something else.

220: Haha, well, now you have an idea what it's like to be cockblocked. All that buildup and anticipation and then poof, no "palate cleanser" for you. :P

Moonlight Whispers = Sasayaki directed by Akihiko Shiota
Tags: foreign, japan, drama, romance, bdsm, fencing, based on comic/graphic novel/manga, R, vhs
Rating:
Synopsis: An offbeat study of the adult games that men and women play filtered through the actions of two seemingly innocent Japanese school kids, Satsuki and Takuya, two 17-year-olds who first meet practising kendo but later fall head over heels in love. They then discover the ways they can most exuberantly express their love for one another, no matter how perverse. It all starts with Takuya stealing Satsuki's belongings like socks, secretly photographing her beautiful legs, and... When Satsuki discovers this, she takes revenge by dominating him and forcing him to watch her having sex with a schoolmate...
Note(s): I cut and copied the above synopsis from IMDb.com, and I'm guessing it was edited, excluding the part about Takuya recording the sound of Satsuki urinating, something he really got off on. So, obviously this movie isn't your typical romance. Like the cover says: "He wants to be her dog. She wants to see him cry." Sweet. :P Anyway, backing up, this is a first for me: I had to downgrade to a VHS tape so I could watch the rest of this movie. I bought the DVD at Half Price Books months back (I couldn't exchange it; I'd shredded the receipt by now), and I spent about one week cleaning that DVD with our work's DVD cleaning machine, trying it out on various players, etc, until I visited my second-favorite store (Amazon.com) for a replacement copy. And after reading some of the reviews, I found I wasn't the only one whose DVD skipped at the exact spot (near the end, when Satsuki invites Takuya and another boy to a hotel). Strangely, I've had two other movies that've had similar manufacturing issues (The Thompsons and Smokin' Aces), skipping at exactly the same spots, even after receiving replacement copies. That's pointless to this movie, I know, but I just wanted to remember what a pain in the ass this movie was. I went to all that trouble of cleaning and cleaning the disc, then reordering a VHS tape (which I abhor vs DVDs), and the movie didn't end up as shocking or explicit as I was expecting. At the end, I had hoped dog-boy would grow a pair, but that would defeat the whole bdsm twist to the movie. Still...Takuya, wth? Stop letting Satsuki beat you. Also, I was utterly confused by the ending. There's a scene that is said to have never happened (huh?? yes, it did); and then suddenly both of them are in the hospital with injuries. What happened to Satsuki's eye? Takuya's injuries I could understand from a fall, but Satsuki's? Confusing as hell. So why a 4? It was still fascinating; kind of like watching a car crash of a romance happen. Recommended if you like pervy Japanese dramas. No major nudity that I remember, just "aberrant sexual behavior."

I'm surprised this averaged out to a 4, because it wasn't super stellar, but there were some songs I really liked, like "Wicked Game" by Chris Isaak.

Pages: 256
Synopsis: From Lonely Planet, the world's leading travel guide publisher, Wild World, the follow-up to the super-sized bestseller Beautiful World, is a vivid and compelling portrait of the world in which we live. Featuring breath-taking images of the natural world, this gorgeous collection of full-page photographs, carefully curated by Lonely Planet's photography experts, brings the world's wildest corners into your home. Incredible and majestic wildlife spectacles and natural phenomena are spellbindingly on display in this beautiful, no-expense-spared hardback.
Note(s): I think the other cover for this book is more accurate in capturing what most of these photographs are of: nature, plants, water, landscapes, etc, rather than mainly of animals. There are animals, just not as many as I was expecting. (And I think this is the first book I've ever listed where the tags take up more room than the synopsis and notes combined.)

244: That's the problem with all this sexual intercourse business - too much time waiting around for things to get soggy. :P
Oh, so you need the beaver to give you permission? I guess we need to find a talking beaver first.

>247 Ape: Yeah, and by the time things get soggy, other things have gone limp. So, I say go gay! :P Funny I give such advice but never take it.
A talking beaver...hmm, no, I don't think I've ever seen or (literally) heard one of those. I don't think queefing beaver counts, does it? Or if it does, it should totally be in the world records, because who cares if someone can belch the alphabet, right, when a woman could do the same with her, um, beaver.
Oh, wait! Found a friendly Canadian beaver! It's even Micky-friendly. But it totally freaked me out, because I kept expecting a car to run it over.

Music for the Masses by Depeche Mode
Tags: alt rock, cd
Rating:
Track Listing: 1 "Never Let Me Down Again", 2" The Things You Said", 3 "Strangelove", 4 "Sacred", 5 "Little 15", 6 "Behind the Wheel", 7 "I Want You Now", 8 "To Have and to Hold", 9 "Nothing", 10 "Pimpf", 11 "Agent Orange", 12 "Never Let Me Down Again" (Aggro Mix), 13 "To Have and to Hold" (Spanish Taster), 14 "Pleasure, Little Treasure".
Note(s): I can't believe I haven't listened to this CD already. Or maybe I only listened to bits and pieces of it; and/or forgot to rate it here on LT. Anyway, it's definitely another keeper by DM. As always, I love the s/m nature of some of the lyrics. My favorite songs on here: "Never Let Me Down Again" (both versions), "Strangelove," and "Behind the Wheel." Recommended if you're into 80's synthpop.

Orphan Black: Series 1 directed by Various Directors
Tags: action, drama, sci fi, ontario, canada, tv tie-in, dvd, series, orphan black
Rating:
Synopsis: A streetwise hustler is pulled into a compelling conspiracy after witnessing the suicide of a girl who looks just like her.
Note(s): So many plot twists! I just finished the last episode tonight (wow, what a cliffhanger!) and wanted to start with season 2 immediately, but I think I might take a breather, since my TBW pile is pretty big, since I put this series ahead of other movies. Thanks again to everyone who recommended this series to me! :)
