Hey guys!
So glad I found this group- I seriously need to make progress on my TBR piles! Purchased waaaaay too many books in 2015 in particular. Since I get quite distracted by shiny new ARCs, I'm going to go for a more manageable ROOTing goal of 20 for this year and see how it all works out! I'm not going to choose the books to ROOT in advance- just gonna pick something off the shelf that matches my mood at the time. But I will limit selections to anything acquired before 2016.

Welcome to the ROOTing group! Happy ROOTing.
20 books is a good amount to start your first year with.

Finished my first ROOT of 2016 over the weekend!! Sort of feels like cheating though.. my copy of And After Many Days is an ARC, as it won't be released until February. But I received the book in the beginning of December, so it's definitely kosher with my ROOTing guidelines!
I enjoyed reading And After Many Days while I was reading it, but I found that when I picked the book back up after taking a break (even if that break was only a few hours), I had trouble remembering where it left off. The description of this novel is a bit misleading, but I actually prefer what the plot ended up delivering rather than the tone/cadence that was suggested by the back cover.

Second ROOT finished! This one was a re-read for me- the first time I read Joan Didion's Play It As It Lays back in 2010 or so, I didn't like it at all. I think I was too young for it then, and didn't yet realize that an unlikable protagonist does not necessarily mean an unlikable book. Re-reading it with Roxane Gay's 'green girl' theory in mind (outlined in the essay Garish, Glorious Spectacles from Bad Feminist), especially after having read Kate Zambreno's Green Girl over the summer, and along with my much-improved maturity, I actually really love Play It As It Lays now.

Finished ROOT #3 this morning! McSweeney's Enchanted Chamber of Astonishing Stories was kinda a snoozefest but there were def 2 or 3 gems.

#4 done! Received an ARC of Lust & Wonder, so I figured I should probably get around to reading my long forgotten copy of Running With Scissors. Except now I don't want to read Lust & Wonder because Running with Scissors was so poorly written and problematic in so many ways. I'll prob speed read it haha idec

Needed a palate cleanser after reading those two awful Burroughs memoirs, so I pulled a Stephen King from the shelf! ROOT #5: Firestarter
20Tess_W
It's awful when you get a couple of stinkers! Hope King is enjoyable for you. I've read many of his works, but not Firestarter.
21verkakte
>20 Tess_W: Firestarter was pretty solid! Not King's best but certainly not his worst. And it was a fairly quick read for a King novel (~400 pages iirc) so it wasn't as demanding time-wise as some of his others lol

#6 done! Moravagine by Blaise Cendrars. When I was reading it I found myself aware that I was reading it rather than being engaged, like I was consuming it rather than interacting with it if that makes sense?

>22 verkakte: That makes sense! You had no connection with the book, I think. That's a pity.

Three done in April so far. Scouting for the Reaper and The Man Who Wouldn't Stand Up, both by Jacob Appel, were both kinda meh. But I FINALLY finished Hos, Hookers, Call Girls, and Rent Boys this morning; this book has been sitting on my bedside table since October! Each entry in the collection is pretty short so I'd read a few at a time and make hardly any progress. But yay, feeling pretty good for finishing that one!
