Welcome to the Malheur Militia Wildlife Refuge. A new exotic form of fauna has invaded and overwhelmed native species.

Can nothing be done to roust them out, or should they be left to carry on until they die on the vine?

What do you think? Do you side with the governor of Oregon?
Angry Governor

Or do you side with the armed 'Patriots'?
Saboteur365

What's the solution?

And because this is LibraryThing, author Ursula K. Le Guin weighs in. I side with her.

>2 sturlington:

Here's a taste from her LTE.
Ammon Bundy and his bullyboys aren’t trying to free federal lands, but to hold them hostage.
As it happens, she and I use the same word, 'hostage' to describe what the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge has become.

So what are the best tactics in a hostage situation? Negotiation.

It took 81 days to end the Montana Freeman standoff and some distasteful to normal citizens negotiators were employed to help.

>2 sturlington: sturlington: The 2 best parts from that LTE are:

1. "The people it doesn’t belong to and who don’t belong there are those who grabbed it by force of arms, flaunting their contempt for the local citizens."

2. "Instead of parroting the meaningless rants of a flock of Right-Winged Loonybirds infesting the refuge..." (What can I say? I enjoy a good insult every now and then...)

Just keeps getting better and better!

Take back Amurika with a Sumo match Mililtia Manga vs. Chris Christie in an avoirdupois match for the ages.

And drunken crackpot on his way to guard the militia from the forces massed against it vows to "kill you all" with a BB gun. In spite of which, he's not shot dead on the spot, only arrested. Some LE still remember how to do their jobs right.

Sadly, no. Amurika's Overthrow Will Not Be Televised

FBI arrests Bundy Brothers, multiple other Malheur militants in traffic stop. Gunfire ensues, Randy Bundy wounded (not life-threatening); one dead -- speculation it's child slave labor leaser, LaVoy Finicum who famously said, "I'd rather be dead than spend any time in prison." As of this typing, dead man's ID not confirmed by FBI.

The elder Bundy bandit is risibly out of touch with reality:

"... Cliven Bundy, Ammon’s father, who led a standoff with the federal government in 2014, said he was devastated by the reports. “My sons are good people and they were there to help … It’s a rotten shame that people there are not trying to harm anybody and now they are shooting them dead.”

He added, “We’re not going to put up with this … This is a pretty big deal for America. This is the way they treat people who try to help? We are tired of the abuse.” http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/jan/26/oregon-militia-standoff-ammon-bun...

Remember when it was a terrible double standard because they didn't shoot them ?

They shot them.

How surprising. An armed group takes over federal buildings and equipment and someone ends up getting shot. Imagine that.

Yes, well, until today nobody could imagine it, the one pinkofficial narrative was they'd get away with it because of privilege or something.

So your revisionist sarcasm makes no sense, which is at least consistent.

A bunch of armed white people take over a federal building and one of them gets shot after weeks of them being allowed to come and go as they please

vs.

A 12-year-old black kid is playing with a toy gun in the park and gets shot right away.

I'd say there's still a double standard.

Is that revisionist gloating?

I certainly hope not!

To be fair to myself, I used the same line with regard to the death of Gaddafi... http://www.librarything.com/topic/125480#2994695

Yep. Revisionist gloating. Guilty. Multiple offenses.

Did you use the same line with regard to the death of the shot armed robber everyone whined about a few weeks ago (to be fair to yourself)?

The death of the shot armed robber everyone whined about a few weeks ago? That narrows it down...to some dozens I would guess. We just had a shootout up in the Italian carso where my son plays baseball--everyone was talking about it.

What the heck is a shot armed robber?

It's a robber who takes a shot glass and a fifth of whiskey with him when he goes out on the prowl....I guess....

Australian firefighters shot at while battling US wildfire
Kylar Loussikian | 11 September 2018 — 12:01am

Nearly 80 Australians have been fighting fires in North America
Two firefighters, on patrol with locals, were shot at in Washington state
Two men have been charged over the incident, which occurred in late August
Australian firefighters have since returned home

Two Australian firefighters, on patrol with US Forest Service personnel in Washington state, were set upon by hunters, chased and shot at ...

>22 margd:

The Australian report says: "The remote area, 160 kilometres from Seattle, is close to land in Oregon where armed anti-government activists seized and occupied the wildlife refuge headquarters for more than a month." In actuality, the firefighters were over 200 miles away from the location of the Bundy standoff.

A much different report comes from KLCC 89.7, NPR for Oregonians: No, Hunters Did Not Open Fire on Australian Firefighters In Washington State".

I hope it's not true, but amazing the yahoos out there. And the hunters' stories don't ring true--to me, at least.

Paramedics in our county are being verbally and even physically threatened.
Who goes after a paramedic?? (The same kind of lowlife who shoots at a firefighter?)

I suspect that in a country as vast as Australia 200 miles would be considered fairly close.

26RickHarsch
Sep 11, 2018, 5:36 pm

>25 John5918: You might also consider how far people 'ranged' to get to the Bundy standoff--many from far more than a mere 200 miles.

>23 cpg: Close is a relative term; when talking about things on the other side of the world, I think most people would tend to see 200 miles as close. And it's not really deceptive; it's not like the two areas are closely connected, culturally, definitely more than with the large metropolitan areas of their states.
