Read about 15 years ago - lost in flood:( Doctor traveled with a raccoon type critter that was used to grow a vaccine to any disease. One short story involved a colony world that was on a wet planet - found out the problem was they were missing an essential element provided by wood smoke - since they had other means of heat & everything was so wet they never burned wood. He fixed it by setting the village roofs on fire. Another was a man-made wasting 'disease'. It simply made people so apathetic they laid down and starved to death.
I've been searching on and off for years now but no luck. Can't remember the name, the author, even the names of the characters are gone from my memory - but I remember really enjoying the stories.

The cure-producing animal companion is in Murray Leinster's "Med Service" stories. Collections include Doctor to the Stars and S.O.S. From Three Worlds.

Yes, this is definitely Murray Leinster. The series is known by both "Med Service" and "Med Ship". To the best of my knowledge, the most recent compilation is Med Ship from Baen and it contains all of the Med stories.
