Hi there. I am currently trying to remember a book that I read a while back, probably about 8 years ago, although the book itself might be older than that. It was about a man whose first wife was a Chinese woman who drowned their daughter, and then eventually committed suicide. He moves to California, and while staying at a hotel, keeps hearing a woman crying in the room next to his. He eventually comforts the woman, and when she leaves, he tracks her down to come home with him (I can't remember if he married her, or if her brings her home as a nanny or governess) to take care of his three adopted daughters, who are Chinese. I only really remember one scene, which has the heroine repainting doll faces for the girls, because the original painted faces were horribly stereotypical. I think that it takes place in the late 1800s, possibly in or near San Francisco. I really want to find this book, so any help at all would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!
