I don't remember if this was a short story, a novella, or even (to be honest) posted online somewhere and not actually published. I don't think it was novel-length, but I guess maybe? I thought it was by Ursula Vernon/T. Kingfisher, but if it is, I can't figure out what/where. I read it within the past couple year or two.
Cinderella's mother was buried under a tree in the backyard/forest nearby and her spirit is hanging around somehow (in the tree? I'm not sure). There is an enchanted bird who translates her wishes to Cinderella (who may or may not be named that).
Cinderella is quite happy working in the garden and doesn't want to marry a prince, so when the bird tells her to take the dresses out of the walnut shells (or something) and wear them to the ball, instead she trades them to a kitchen maid. The maid goes to the ball, Cinderella gets to see how the royal gardeners grow oranges in this climate.

Glad you asked and then found, so I could read the delightful story.
It's similar to the picture book re-telling, Cinder Edna.
Lovely main characters.
