Okay, as promised, you can now vote on group moderation.

Every member, watcher or poster within the last two months is eligible to vote, minus those who watched or posted after I posted that there would be a vote.

Vote here: http://www.librarything.com/groups_vote.php

I'm keeping the vote entirely secret--neither count nor numbers. I don't want a popularity contest.

I'm going to keep it open until at least Wednesday noon. I may send out a profile comment to eligible voters.

Let me know if you have any problems or questions.

Okay, vote is closed. Results in a moment.

I demand a recount.

Good, because you won.

5Jesse_wiedinmyer

All the more reason for a recount.

Have the write-ins and absentee ballots been counted?

Did everyone show ID to prove they are citizens of LT-land?

Okay, the results are in:

1. An overwhelming majority of voters cast a vote for moderation.
2. @southernbooklady was picked as moderator, decisively

I'll start rolling out moderation features in the next few days.

As someone who didn't vote, the prospect of SBL going all Acton is oddly amusing.

10RidgewayGirl
Jun 15, 2016, 12:47 pm

Glad that's done.

Just this process and the resulting discussion on it has already improved things immeasurably, and i think brought some more participants to our group. I'm happy with the results.

12Jesse_wiedinmyer

Something tells me that SBL will, if anything, be overly lenient.

I mean, at least until the power goes to her head.

I would suggest that we hold speculation on the nature of southernbooklady's moderation until we have some evidence one way or the other.

I did vote in favor of moderation, which I think will surprise nobody. To be 100% honest the prospect of this working is probably the only reason I'm on Talk at all right now.

I fully admit to being initially skeptical but very hopeful this will be a positive direction for this group. I value the discussions in this group immensely, even when I am quiet in them. I like having hope we won't have to waste time on trolls/hijackers now and we can discuss in good faith.

>11 sturlington: and i think brought some more participants to our group

I'm a new participant, albeit not one who declined to participate earlier. Rather, the discussion on moderation acquainted me with the group and I like what I found.

>17 norabelle414:

That's a general problem. I don't think groups are well exposed. This one has trended up in the "Active Groups" list. But I doubt that's much consulted.

I've been watching this group with great interest for a while but I have only ever posted a couple of times. I have the greatest respect for Nicki after interacting with her in a number of other groups and I'm pleased to see her being chosen for this role.

Jun 15, 2016, 1:53 pm

>18 timspalding: Indeed. I don't check the "Active Groups" list because many of them are "challenge" groups, and I already have my preferred challenge group and am not looking for another.

21lilithcat
Jun 15, 2016, 1:53 pm

>18 timspalding:

I don't look much at "Active Groups" because the most active ones (at least usually) are groups I have on "Ignore" (challenge groups, Green Dragon, games, etc.). I occasionally check out "Newest", primarily to check for spam groups.

If I'm looking for a group on a particular subject, I'll search using the site search.

I read Talk in the "All Groups" setting, and that exposes me to a variety of threads in groups of which I am not a member and which I'm not watching. That's how I ended up here.

#13.

Ok.

All I'm trying to say it's that I've known her for years probably as close to two decades as one, across 3-4 different sites and platforms.

I'm trying to imagine just what it would take to earn her censure, and I'm not sure I can.

At the point someone receives moderation from Nicki, I'm assuming they needed moderation.

>12 Jesse_wiedinmyer:

"Overly lenient" to me sounds as as critical-sounding as the reverse; thank you for explaining that you didn't mean it that way.

24Jesse_wiedinmyer

I think she's a reluctant moderator at best. And I hope her reluctance is merited.

>11 sturlington: I follow Talk on 'All Topics' so I never pay that much attention to which groups I'm actually a member of unless they are 'Join to post' or private. The whole moderation discussion has made me more aware of 'joining' as a thing worth doing. Also, what steers me away from posting in topics that otherwise interest me is abrasive argument rather than debate and discussion. Once a thread devolves to that, I just don't have the energy to engage (unless I'm in a really bad mood ... in which case, I probably shouldn't engage). I'm still unsure about moderation as a whole - I've explained why on other threads - but it has encouraged me to pay more attention here as I can see that there may be a chance to engage and discuss, even disagree, without it becoming toxic.

I'm confident that SBL will do a fine job as our moderator. And thanks are due to sturlington and lilithcat for being willing to take that role.

It's my hope that having established a moderating system here that we never need to use it.

I feel the same, and hope that moderation of the more contentious threads will avoid some of this.

I also stop posting when I find that I am doing not much more than repeating what I've already said several times!

Ah, so I just clicked over from "your posts" to "your groups" in talk and found this thread. I'll do my best to be an equitable moderator for the group. Here's hoping the position will require almost no action!

I'm sure Tim or someone will let me know the specifics, but for the people who are members of the Feminist Theory group, and especially people who have lurked but avoided participating for whatever reason, I hope you'll look at the thread that is discussing group code of conduct:

http://www.librarything.com/topic/224406

There is the place to air goals and concerns so everyone can be aware of them.

And here is a place to vote on the currently proposed terms so they can be implemented:
