58. Yotsuba&!, vol. 10 - Kiyohiko Azuma

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
July 2016 TIOLI Challenge: Read a book with an acronym or abbreviation in the title
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So cute! This book begins with Yotsuba trying to play with her father while he has work to do, That so reminds me of my grandson. Then the next chapter goes on to show Yotsuba making pancakes with her dad. If anyone has ever made pancakes with a youngster, this chapter will have you laughing out loud. It is a true depiction of the pancake-making process with a young child.
So sweet! Jumbo buys Yotsuba an animal sticker book. She proceeds to put the sticker son blocks, and they both play zoo together. i can relate to that. Then Daddy and Jumbo take Yotsuba and Fuuka to an electronics sore. So much to see! So much to touch! So much to try out! Daddy can't figure out which camera to buy. I can relate tot hat as well. Don't fall asleep before you get home, Yotsuba!
Aw!!! Yotsuba borrows Asagi's exercise ball and break things accidentally at home after borrowing the ball. Her dad takes her to the scary shrine to get rid of Yotsuba's "lying bug". Was such a scary lesson really necessary? I don't know, but this chapter was really funny.
I liked this volume very, very much. It's quite endearing!

July 2016 TIOLI Challenge: Reward yourself by reading a book that you've been hoarding for at least a year (2009)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was thinking that I wasn't getting too much out of this story about an Australian high-school lad Dan whose parents were spending a year working in Europe so he had to live with his aunt Jacq, a uni (university) student and her roommate Naomi. Dan has a crush on Naomi and is trying to figure out how to act at a party his roommates host at their house when he encounters Imogen, a party guest with a Chuppa-Chup (lollipop). I practically fell on the floor laughing at this party scene. I'm glad I stuck with this book at least for all of the belly laughs just that one chapter gave me. Dan perseverates a lot, and we readers still hear about Naomi even as this book ends, but it concludes on a happy and realistic note. It turned out to be a fine read after all.

60. The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde

July 2016 TIOLI Challenge TIOLI: Insert Your Book Title in the Blank: On my summer vacation I am going to visit _____.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I very much enjoyed reading this classic. It's one I've wanted to read for years because my mom many years ago said she enjoyed it. I finally got to it after it was chosen by my online book club.
This was quite the horror story. I enjoyed picturing in my mind everything that was happening. It got creepier as it went along. It had a sudden and powerful ending.
I also liked reading about the undercurrents of homosexuality in this story which had been published in 1891. I know that the author was gay and wondered how this would play out in reading his works. In this book, it was clear that the painter Basil Hallward obviously adored the protagonist, Dorian Gray. Gray's other close friend, Lord Henry Wotton, was always a part of his life. On the other hand, Gray never had a fully satisfactory relationship with women in this story and was still a bachelor at this tale's end.
There were two things I liked a bit less about this book. First, I had the Russian edition of the English version. Therefore I could not read the footnotes which were all in Russian. I started looking up terms and people I didn't know, but that got old pretty soon.
I also didn't like when the story went off on long tangents of conversation. I especially disliked the part where the author itemized all of Gray's studies and reading. I thought that part would never end.
Nevertheless, this is a fun and worthwhile read. I definitely would recommend it to others who like to read classics and horror stories.

So, for the time being, walking is interrupting my reading. It turns out that my Little Free Library of Twinbrook (#7720) is a Pokemon GO gym. Because of that, I downloaded the app and am learning to play the game. Despite all of the negative comments about it on the news, it is really fun.
I went out walking with my older son last night in Glen Echo Park in Montgomery County, Maryland, to play the game. What a fun thing to do on a summer's night in a safe environment! Today I did some walking in my own neighborhood. In order to get certain game features, one needs to walk. My husband was surprised to see me go out and walk because I always complain that walking is boring. This game makes it not boring. :)
Since my Little Free Library is a "gym" (where Pokemon GO players, called trainers, go to train or do battle), I often come home to see groups of teens and young adults hanging out in the vicinity of my Little Free Library. They mostly stare at their phones, but I did notice an uptick in book "takers" this week. I think I'll try to stock more teen and young adult books in the coming weeks.
Some people are unhappy about having their property surrounded by strangers playing this game, but I find it fun. I talk to the visitors to see what team they're on. I always hope that they're on Team Valor (my red team).
I have totally refused to play any online game since getting my smart phone (and for quite a few years on my desktop), but this time I caved. Haha!

On a more serious note, I've now decided to read All Rivers Run to the Sea, the memoirs of Elie Wiesel.
I feel so sad that we've lost this man, albeit he died of natural causes at age 87, who over the years became a true champion for the preservation of human dignity. The world has lost so much with Wiesel's passing.

July 2016 TIOLI challenge: Read a book in which you find an eating description ("You eat pizza with your hands. No chopsticks.")
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Of all the Yotsuba&! books I've read so far, I think this is my favorite one. Every chapter spoke to me. This is either the result of my babysitting my own grandchild who is a preschooler and "knowing' what such kids do or simply falling love with the characters of Yotsuba and her loving, laid-back dad.
The first chapter is about a udon noodle maker. My own grandson always eyeballs food in just the way Yotsuba does in order to get an offer of something to eat. So sweet!
The second chapter is about Yotsuba and her dad ordering a pizza. For lunch today, my husband and I shared a pizza with my grandson. I like when Yotsuba remarks, "It's so Western." I also only know too well about a preschooler barfing after overeating food he or she loves. *sigh*
The third chapter is about when Yanda (Yotsuba's nemesis) arrives, and everyone is "hiding" from Yanda although they can easily be seen. Yanda has all kinds of bubbles for Yotsuba but hangs onto the best bubble wands. He teases her mercilessly. Not good, but that's his character. Bubble play is so much fun with preschoolers.
The fourth chapter is about chestnut-picking. I learned a lot about chestnuts in this chapter and so did Yotsuba!
In the fifth chapter, Yotsuba gets a camera and she learns about camera "etiquette". This is good information for anyone. Yotsuba learns quickly.
The sixth chapter is funny and sad at the same time. Yotsuba's beloved teddy bear, named Juralumin, gets roughed up and licked by a dog. Yotsuba has to be brave to get back her slimy teddy bear. I laughed out loud at this chapter.
In the final chapter, neighbor Agasi repairs Juralumin who stopped talking from being immersed in water during a cleansing. This repair takes a long time, and Yotsuba has to be patient until the "surgery" (repairs) is done.
I now can't wait to read the next volume.

July 2016 TIOLI Challenge: Read a book in which the main character is away from home (on a camping trip)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I totally love this series of books. The more of these volumes I read, the more endearing all of the characters become...even Yanda.
My favorite parts of this volume were the camping trip, Yanda making Yotsuba laugh by having open eyes drawn on his eyelids, the picture of everyone having dinner at the campsite (which reminds me of a long-ago trip with another family to West Virginia), the three girls asleep in their papoose-like sleeping bags, Jumbo sprawling on top of the three children when they were testing the direction of the tent pad, and the picture of Yotsuba sitting on her dad's lap watching the fire. Such love.
I'm ready for volume 13 to be available here in the United States!

July 2016 TIOLI Challenge: Read a book where one or more words in the title have either a good or bad undertone (bad)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am so surprised at how attached young children get to super heroes. Even my grandson, who was not exposed to licensed characters for the first three years of his life is now so attached to super heroes, with the Hulk being one of his favorites. So, in this short volume, we also meet other characters such as Captain America, Ant-Man, Wasp, Thor, and Iron Man. It doesn't matter that my grandson is too young to read yet. He still loves to hear about these characters. I read this to him to make him happy. Super heroes don't do much at all for me, though.

July 2016 TIOLI challenge: Read a book in which the main character is away from home (at school)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My three-year-old grandson loves this book and requests that I read it repeatedly. I enjoy doing so. I adore its colorful, humorous illustrations. The teacher, Mrs. Inkydink, has such a funny name! I like the message of this book because there always comes a time to remind a preschooler that boisterous activity needs to be subdued, and there is a need to "stay cool". I also like how this book introduces the concept of rhyme. This is a delightful book which I certainly recommend to all who enjoy reading picture books to preschoolers.

I never Fitbitted. My friend Barbara Fitbits. I have a pedometer on my iPhone. Pokemon GO is just the inspiration to get me out walking. Otherwise walking is so boring. I've been averaging about a mile and a half each day walking from Pokestop to Pokestop and then home. I hope no other players know what I'm doing because I seem to be the only senior citizen out doing this. :D

Hi, Madeline! My goodness, this is a bright and cheerful new thread---and I'm loving the frogs!
I just thought I'd stop by and let you know that after literal months of putting one another off, Ilana and I will be doing a tutored read of Emma in September. Since you're the one who (accidentally) started all this, I was really hoping you'd be able to join us---or at least drop in and lurk. :)

By the way, I recently read The Picture of Dorian Gray which is a book much older than those I usually read. I really liked it. I looked for it in your library, thinking I might find it there, but I didn't. Have you read it? I think you'd like it! My mom always said that she liked that book...and she died in 1970! :)

>27 qebo: That is such a cute article, Katherine!
I hate the Pokemon GO character Zubat, He flits around too much, and I can never catch him. I think it's so funny that they named the real baby bat Zubat. That's adorable.
I haven't found any injured animals yet. but when I see a healtyh bird on the ground, I always get this feeling that I need to throw a Pokeball at it! :D

65. The Joyful Bear: A Furry Philosophy for Overcoming Adversity and Finding Happiness - Margaret Meps Schulte

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
June 2016 TIOLI Challenge: Read a book that mentions a summer Olympic sport (sailing)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Very cute. I'm not sure how helpful this book is to me personally with its chapters of advice, but I did find the drawings adorable and the friendship with a personal teddy bear very sweet.
I am a "fuzzy animal person" and have used a stuffed koala bear as a "get well bear" for our kids when they were young. Now, during any of our visits to the local playground. my grandson and I visit Bo Bear, a pink teddy bear, which sits out-of-doors on the bow of a neighbor's boat.

66. Yotsuba&!, volume 13 - Kiyohiko Azuma

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 2016 TIOLI Challenge: Read a book with a title whose entirety describes a woman or girl - 224 pages
This book is so cute. I just love this series. The part I most enjoyed about this volume was the visit of Yousuke's mother, Yotsuba's grandmother. I waited to see how she would be portrayed, and dearly loved how she was done. I drew parallels between her relationship with Yotsuba and my own relationship with my grandson. Both Yotsuba's grandmother and I do origami and share some with our own grandchild. . I recognized the cicada origami. We both bake with our grandchild. We cut up kiwi fruit and share it with our respective grandchild. We both bring them special gifts and ask our grandchildren what each draws. Both Yotsuba's grandmother and I have an iPhone. Haha! I am happy to live near my grandchild, but I was in tears as Yotsuba's grandmother left after a three-day visit. I hope she returns in a later volume. It was such a sweet intergenerational visit!

I have been reading other books than manga, but this last book just came out so I borrowed it from the library and had to read it at once! The other books I'm reading are kind of being read in snippets. In between, I'm babysitting my grandson, cooking and baking for my family, playing Pokemon GO and walking approximately 2 miles each day, and working tirelessly on my Little Free Library and on the TIOLI challenges. So much fun!
Today's highlight: playing "snowboarders" with my grandson. I found a white piece of cotton batting which I used to cover some pillows on the sofa. I then made index card snowboards for several little characters. I'm getting so creative! Today's book was: Rapunzel, but it was the Strawberry Shortcake version. I wasn't too crazy about it, but I acted it out in all its scariness for my grandson's listening pleasure.
I hope everyone had a fun summer.

>36 SqueakyChu: Well it's a sudden switch to fall weather here. Which is better for yard tending than the recent stretches 90+ degrees. FYI, I've committed to a long weekend in Cape May in October, and with limited travel resources this means I won't get to DC for the National Book Festival. Sorry not to see you then, but there will surely be other opportunities in the future.

>37 qebo: The Cape May weekend sounds just lovely. I'll still be meeting up with Bookcrossers at the National Book festival, but the way that festival runs is just frustrating and less fun for me now. At least my other two local book festivals are still great.
How about if you and other LTers plan a non-book festival weekend down here in the -Baltimore DC area? I always love to see everyone and will be glad to host again. Nora is a good planner. Perhaps she can think of something. The Book Thing of Baltimore will reopen in the fall sometime.
Another idea would be a "reading"/board games (Hi Zoe!) weekend off season at a beach resort for all of us. The prices would be right and the company great! I love being out of heavy traffic.

67. Rapunzel: Strawberry Shortcake - Megan E. Bryant

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 2016 TIOLI challenge: Read a series book by an author you've never read before
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was pretty unhappy with this story. Although the basic premise was a good one (things may be less scary than they look), I really did not like how this book brought out this message.
First of all, the relationship between this story and the classic tale of Rapunzel was so thin as to almost be nonexistent. So why was there the need to take the title of "Rapunzel"?
Second, I really was offended that the "witch" in this book was pictured as a black girl. Was that to indicate that we should all be afraid of black children before we get to know them? There was also very little delineation of the difference between a "witch" and an otherwise "normal" person.
I remember that my own daughter was very much enamored of all things Strawberry Shortcake when she was a child. I would not have liked this book to have been part of her library.

>36 SqueakyChu: Grandchildren are wonderful!! I seems like yesterday when your grandson was born, now fast forward and he is old enough to comprehend playing games. Where did the time go?
41SqueakyChu
>40 Whisper1: I have no idea, but I am simply amazed by how quickly he learns things. Once he was a blank slate, but now he wants to learn about "black holes and dark matter" and well as space shuttles and snowboarding!!

Madeline, hold fast to these times, the memories remain, but the child moves on faster than we can imagine. I became the grandmother of four within 14 months. My first grand child, Kayla, is now 13. She was followed one month later by twins Jack and Luke, and much to my daughter's surprise, they didn't need invitro for their third child, a daughter born just 13 months later.
Life is good. Each child is unique, with different interests and personalities. I'm reminded of a song by the 80's group Abba, titled Slipping Through My Fingers.

Oops, sorry, I missed this!
I thought I owned Dorian Gray, but perhaps I just haven't catalogued it? I have certainly read it several times---it's a very important contribution to British fantasy, as well as a powerful work in its own right. I'm glad you liked it!
Actually---I was just dropping in to let you know that the thread is up for Emma - here - and that I added a little reminiscence / thank you at the beginning: I hope that's okay? I know you won't be able to participate but it would be lovely if you could drop by and say "Hi!" :)

Just popping in to catch up. Have fun re-enacting the books for your grandson--that should hook him!!

It may seem that I have read nothing of much substance this quarter, but that is not entirely true. I'm reading five books slowly...none of which I've finished. The one I'm lingering on the most is an anthology of short stories by contemporary Japanese authors. I am really savoring this book by reading it so slowly. It's a 500+ page paperback. Had it been a hardcover book, it would have been quite sizable!
Meanwhile, here is my fourth quarter thread.
Thanks for stopping by!
