I have read The Shining,Carrie,Christine and a few others. I can't read Misery or anything about drowning. Any ideas on choosing my next one?

As far as I know, there's no drowning in Misery.

I'm quite partial to Needful Things myself.

Let's give him his name: Stephen King.

Starting with Salem's Lot, I read the earlier books about as fast as they came out. Of those, I probably liked The Stand best.

Skip Cujo. You just don't want to read it.

He touched bottom with The Tommyknockers when he was at a deep personal low. It was so bad that I left him alone for years. He says now that he barely even remembers writing it.

I came back around for 11/22/63, which was brilliant (and probably extra-special to those of us who remember 1963--and 1958), and after that I was okay with a few other recent ones. He's got his brains back, and he has nothing to prove any more, so he can do whatever he wants. He gleefully breaks the rules and gets away with it. Most of the time I lack the patience for his excesses, but he can still pump out a good yarn and pull off special effects, and there's still a core, a heart, to his stories that grips you. I admire what he's done even when it doesn't suit my appetite.

Yes, how could I forget Salem's Lot? It was disturbing. Also a favorite of mine. I should have said I can not read Misery, nor can I read about drowning. You've given me some good ideas. Thanks!

I really enjoyed The Stand, Cell, and The Green Mile but I didn't care for The Gunslinger and some of his shorter fiction. I've got others of his on my TBR, but he's a little bit hit and miss for me.

ETA The Stand, not The Shining

My favorite is probably Salem's Lot or The Shining. The Stand was great. I enjoyed the first 700 pages of IT but felt ambivalent about the ending. The Dead Zone is another novel that I have a lot of affection for. As far as the more recent stuff goes, I loved 11/22/63, and Revival, and I haven't disliked one of Stephen King's novels since probably before Under the Dome.

I really enjoy the way he writes about small towns, which is why I am looking forward to reading Needful Things at some point in the near future.

I recently finished Mr Mercedes and enjoyed it enormously. The unusual mix of characters - retired detective, a teen heading to Harvard, and a disturbed middle-aged woman - worked together so well.

The Stand is my favourite: such a rich, resonant novel, and endlessly re-readable. The Long Walk and It come close.

The Stand, Salem's Lot (time for a reread, and The Shining
