Yikes! My library somehow erased my entire reading history!! I read a book last year about an American ex-pat (35-ish year old man) who is living on a remote island, not wanting to be found. He has a girlfriend there and does a lot of spear fishing. A man from his past searches him out and surprises him on the island to tell him that something has happened to his father. The visitor stays on the island for a while, then the ex-pat and the visitor embark on a journey home (New Jersey?). The ex-pat intends to take his girlfriend, but she breaks down on a neighboring island and has to wait months to get back to her island. Meanwhile, the ex-pat returns home and in time resumes his life there. His father dies one night sitting in a chair and the ex-pat is torn between resuming to his life there or returning to the island. He ends up giving his father's house to an ex-girlfriend and returning to the island. I believe the author has a slightly unusual name that I thought I would never forget! Anybody????

Googling "spearfishing + "father" + "novel" turns up Leaving Losapas.
