I got a suggestion to separate out BingoDOG discussion from the CAT discussion, which I think makes sense. So here is where we can discuss BingoDOG plans. First question is whether we want to do a main BingoDOG card next year. Let's leave aside any suggestions for PUPs for now. Please chime in with your thoughts.
Vote: The BingoDOG should return in 2017.
Current tally: Yes 30, No 1, Undecided 2
2sallylou61
We might want to wait until after the CATs have been decided to discuss the BingoDOGs/PUPs in much detail.
For this year (2016) we added Woman BingoPUP since people had voted for the BingoDOG to remain as it was the year before (i.e. general, without a focus on any topic/type of author). I was considering the DOG the "official" Bingo.
Many people played/are playing both the DOG and the PUP this year (2016).

>2 sallylou61: We can get the discussion going but we don't have to make any firm decisions until after the CATs have been voted on.
We'll also allow enough time to make certain everyone gets a chance to vote in >1 sturlington: above.
In the meantime, please share any general thoughts about how the BingoDOG worked for you this year or if you have any suggestions for improving it.

I am definitely hoping Bingo returns next year! I like the fact that, as >2 sallylou61: mentioned, it's a general challenge with no focus on a particular topic or type of author. That's why I didn't do the Woman BingoPUP -- I prefer the more generalized approach of the "official" BingoDOG. Of course, if people want to do a more focused BingoPUP again next year, that's great! But I hope we retain the general option as well.
5majkia
My only complaint about this year's BingoDOG is some of the tiles were very narrow in focus. I'm happier with tiles that allow a bit more room to interpret them. I'm trying to read my TBR not expand my reading, granted.
6LibraryCin
I'm in for BingoDOG again next year! I'm happy with how it has been done. There are some trickier squares, but so far, I've managed!
7cbl_tn
I love the BingoDOG! With two empty squares left, I anticipate filling in the whole card before the end of the year. I'm also doing the Woman BingoPUP, but I don't think I'll be able to fill in every square.
It seemed to me that this year's BingoDOG has improved over last year's card. Some of the squares are challenging but not overly restrictive. I think we're learning from experience!

8DeltaQueen50
I also loved the BingoDog and hope we do another one. Like Carrie, I found this year's a little easier to fill in than the previous one.
9VivienneR
I enjoyed both BingoDOG and BingoPUP this year (I've got one square in each left to fill) and hope we do both again next year. The few that were outside my normal reading gave it a bit of challenge. Like >7 cbl_tn: and >8 DeltaQueen50: I found it easier this year than last year.
10sturlington
Just checking in here, it looks like many people are interested in continuing the BingoDOG next year. We'll wait until the CATs are decided to start organizing those in detail.
11LittleTaiko
Loved the BingoDOG and am hoping that it returns (only three squares to go this year!). Not sure if I'd do a PUP again as it has been hard for me to fill both for some reason - might just depend on the topic.
12sturlington
>11 LittleTaiko: I agree--I thought two cards were a little too much. I know I'm not going to finish the PUP card, but I have a chance to finish the DOG card. I only have three squares left too.
13Kristelh
I have one square for Bingo Dog and it is airplane flight but I am thinking I might have to use rocket flight. I read plenty of those. I have way more squares on the Women bingo card and that is not going to get completed. I liked doing it but it was too specific and narrow. Made it next to impossible unless you made it a focus and I didn't.
14Deesirings
I've just joined the group and have been looking through the 2016 happenings -- the BingoDOG looks super fun. I hope there is another one in 2017.

The CATs have been decided. Shall we start planning the BingoDOG? In the past, we had volunteers suggest one or two square options. Would you like to do that again?
18christina_reads
>17 sturlington: I'd be happy to do it that way again -- it has seemed to work out well in the past! But I'd also be fine with trying something new if the group wants to shake things up.
19LittleTaiko
>17 sturlington: & >18 christina_reads: - Agreed that it's worked well in the past. Looking forward to seeing what everyone suggests this year.
20sallylou61
The CATWoman has won as a CAT! This year (2016) we had a Woman BingoPUP instead of a WomanKIT since there seemed to be more interest in the PUP (and it seemed easier to set up). I know that a lot of people played both the DOG and PUP this year, and that some have expressed the idea that 2 bingo cards is too much while others have wanted both to stay.
One other idea about Woman BingoPUP. If we do not want to play 2 cards, perhaps the BingoDOG card could also do for the Woman BingoPUP, just using women authors or about women for the squares. I think it would have worked this year.
What do we want to do? Should we discuss a Woman BingoPUP here, or create another thread for the discussion?

>20 sallylou61: I like your idea of restricting the BingoDOG card to just women if you want the extra challenge. I probably would not try to do two cards again.

24majkia
>23 sturlington: Ah. That's good then.
25.Monkey.
>22 majkia: I could be mistaken but I'm pretty sure the suggestion is that if people are interested in a women card they can play the DOG using only women authors for it.
Annnd the cat was getting in my way and made me slow. heh.

>20 sallylou61: perhaps the BingoDOG card could also do for the Woman BingoPUP, just using women authors or about women for the squares.
I don't want to do mine this way (especially also with a CATWoman), but there's nothing that says that it can't be a personal choice.
ETA: Ah, I see it being a choice has already been mentioned in >23 sturlington:

27sallylou61
>22 majkia:, >26 LibraryCin: Sorry that my suggestion in >20 sallylou61: was not clear. >23 sturlington: and >25 .Monkey.: were correct about using women as being an option.
I was suggesting not making a separate Bingo card for the Woman BingoPUP; using the regular Bingo card instead and aiming it towards women for those who wanted that option. For this year's Bingo cards, I found that I liked the regular Bingo card better than the Woman BingoPUP card, and used a lot of women authors on BingoDOG. At least one participant in the Woman BingoPUP did that as her only challenge (No BingoDOG and no CAT). I think only a few people have mentioned wanting to do two cards this year, and that was before the CAT voting was completed.
Although I do not want to coordinate developing a separate Woman BingoPUP card for 2017, I am willing to help out if there is sufficient demand for a separate card.
(Another option for Woman BingoPUP would be using the Bingo card for either 2015 or 2016 and using women authors. However, people might not want to do the same squares as before with a different slant.)

I like the idea of having one BingoDog and letting people decide whether to go with all women author's or not. I would probably not go with only women authors, but if I decided to do the BingoDog twice during the year, it would be fun to use that option on the second one.
29.Monkey.
I don't really see why a woman card would be needed since this year women finally made it into the actual CATs. So it would be pretty redundant. Though for anyone looking for even more challenge, doing the DOG with women only ought to work fine.
30sturlington
So we need 24 suggestions for the card. Please send 1 or 2 suggestions to me via private message (try to keep them brief enough to fit in a bingo square). I'll compile into a final list.
31sturlington
Thanks for all the great suggestions I have gotten so far. Need more! Please send them my way.

I see that Parnassus on Wheels is on the "published in 1917" list. It's a lovely little book that I think has aged pretty well, and it would be a great choice for anyone who hasn't yet read it.
41VivienneR
>40 cbl_tn: Thanks for that information! I have it waiting on the tbr shelf.

It also works for the books about books square!

Looking forward to joining in with this year.

Do we have any volunteers to make our bingo cards this year?
46LittleTaiko
Are there any instructions on how to create one? If so, I'd be happy to give it a go, however I'm not really sure how to do it from scratch.
47sturlington
>46 LittleTaiko: You could probably use this year's card as a template.
48LittleTaiko
>47 sturlington: - The link for the card takes me to lshelby.com so there isn't much to work with in regards to how to actually set this up. LShelby was the very nice LT member who created these for us last year. I'll see if she can tell me how to do this.
49LittleTaiko
Haven't forgotten about this. Am working with LShelby to get cards for this year. Just sent her our categories and will post the think once she has a chance to create the cards. I'm hoping to get instructions on how to do this so next year we don't need to bother her and I can do it.

If there's a problem and you ask me for help and I don't reply right away, don't panic until at least a full week has gone by. That's about how often I've been managing to get online recently. Alas.
I hope y'all have lots of fun playing BINGO for another year! :)

For the square "title refers to another literary work" - does a song count? I was thinking of reading Eleven Piper's Piping.
