I read these books so very long ago and I loved the author . I was in elementary school at the time. Her books were thick and had no pictures but that's what caught my attention . It was so long ago and I only remember one story by HER.

This lady lives in this rich guy's huge home with a lot of land . She is hired to be the new nanny to his child . The late nanny mysteriously vanished . She lives in this creepy place and soon finds out that the child had killed the other nanny by taking her to these caves on her land and tricking her into standing on quicksand. ( the book was really creepy but I don't remember much detail..)
The author wrote alot of mysterious , suspense books but that's all I can remember.

I know that I've read this, but its been a really long time ago.
The only title that I can think of that might be what you're looking for is The Shivering Sands by Victoria Holt.
However, Victoria Holt is not your usual grade school read.

YAY! I think this is it. Im going to read it asap. :)
I was always a higher level reader than most of my class mates. While they were trying to find picture books, I found these interesting looking books . Not even a cover picture but I think the older ,plainer looking books are more attractive .. Im not sure why they had them at an elementary school's library but Im glad they were there . :)
