How a man & woman meet...seems like there's a streetcar involved...she's going to work, and stops at a diner, and he says hello to her there. She has a friend from work with whom she stays in touch with after she isn't working anymore; that woman helps them out here and there, and is a very lonely person herself. I think one daughter has an abortion.

The era it tells of is 1940s-1970s...but I am pretty sure it was written much more recently than that.
I was given this book, and after I read it I gave it away, and now I want to read it again. It was so good.
Thanks for your help!

Sounds like After This:

Description:
Alice McDermott's powerful novel is a vivid portrait of an American family in the middle decades of the twentieth century. Witty, compassionate, and wry, it captures the social, political, and spiritual upheavals of those decades through the experiences of a middle-class couple, their four children, and the changing worlds in which they live.

>2 indybr12: YES! Thank you so so so much! I'd actually sort of thought, could it be Anne Tyler...but nothing by her rang a bell.
