Thought it might be a good idea to have a specific thread to use for sharing some book bargain info or links. Anyone who spots any book, ebook or audiobook deals that they think the rest of us might be interested, PLEASE let us know.

For instance the kindle and epub version of The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is on sale for $1.99 on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Google. This will probably only last for a few days, as the regular price is $9.99.

If you're not interested at all then please just put this thread on ignore. I'm hopeful that enough of us will use it to make it worthwhile. :o)

I'll offer a good spot, not sure if everyone has it bookmarked or not:

http://www.bookbub.com/

Offers lots of bargains, including free, $0.99, $1.99, and $2.99 books. Popular authors and Indies. It's ebook only, though. :)

4clamairy
Nov 4, 2016, 8:19 am

>3 gilroy: Yeah, I get their daily emails. I also get Book Riot's, Book Perk's and Early Bird Books' emails. Oh, and I get the Amazon's Daily Deal email. Plus I use Luzme. In fact Luzme emails me when something on my wishlists here on LT or on Amazon has had a price drop. That's how I found out about the book in the first post.

My main reason for this thread is that I still miss things, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. My mail filter eats some of my bookish email, and by the time I find out the deals are done. Plus they don't list everything, obviously that would be impossible. I thought it might be nice to have one thread to use if we saw any book deals that we knew others members were interested in or on the look-out for.

There is an awful lot of crap to wade through with these bargain books sites and emails. Again, that's why I started the thread. Hoping at least occasionally someone will post a gem and save me some legwork and some money.

Yes, it's good to have a dedicated place to post. I usually end up putting them in my own thread, but I know that not everyone reads the journals. Too bad Amazon has made it more difficult to compare prices across their different sites, making it hard to tell which countries a deal is available in.

I get emails from BookBub, Amazon and Audible daily deals, because they give me Canadian links. Smart Bitches, Trashy Books also does a daily newsletter, but I have to do some digging to find out whether the books are on sale in Canada. Luzme doesn't seem to be working properly for me anymore. I need to check my settings there. I should check some of the other sites that have been mentioned to see if any of them have Canadian options.

Nov 4, 2016, 10:38 am

>4 clamairy: I use BookBub and Luzme, and I had no idea it was possible to tie Luzme into my LT and Amazon wishlists. I've gotta rig up that setting stat.

13clamairy
Nov 4, 2016, 11:37 am

>11 SylviaC: Check Luzme again, Sylvia. After months of issues it seems to suddenly be working perfectly. The main problem with posting them in the journal threads is I sometimes take off a few weeks from reading them, and then when I catch up the price cuts are no longer in effect.

>12 MyriadBooks: Yes, you must do it! That is my favorite feature.

14Maddz
Nov 4, 2016, 3:31 pm

>6 clamairy: I'd agree with that. I really only keep an eye on the first page; luckily I'm mostly only interested in SFF and the crime section.

Are Luzme and Bookbub discounts available in the UK? A lot of US discounts aren't, unfortunately - OpenRoad Media titles are a case in point.

Most of these things are pretty well known, I think, but I thought I’d post a few SF&F sources I’m aware of:

1. In the U.S. and Canada, Tor is currently offering a free e-book during the first 7 days of each month. This month’s offering is Spin by Robert Charles Wilson. Past offerings (no longer available) have been The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu, The Just City by Jo Walton, and Range of Ghosts by Elizabeth Bear. http://ebookclub.tor.com/

2. Cory Doctorow, whose books I believe were originally published by Tor, offers several of his books for free on his web site. I recently read Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom and it was an interesting experience. http://craphound.com/

3. Peter Watts, author of the Rifters series, offers some of his backlist for free. This includes the entire Rifters series, beginning with Starfish, and Blindsight. http://www.rifters.com/real/shorts.htm

4. The publisher Baen has offered had a free e-book library for years, although the selection is no longer as large as it was in the past. Lots of science fiction, and a little bit of fantasy. http://www.baen.com/categories/free-library.html

Aside from the first one, which I know is only available in the U.S. in Canada, I don’t know if there are any country restrictions at these links.

>19 SylviaC: Did you try e-mailing to your kindle account and then delivering to your kindle via Amazon's 'Manage Your Content and Devices' tool?

Also, under that interface, any kindle books that are not purchased or borrowed directly through Amazon are usually found under 'Docs' instead of under 'Books'.

21SylviaC
Nov 5, 2016, 9:15 pm

>20 ScoLgo: I just kept getting emails back from Amazon saying that there was a problem with the document. Which was odd, because it opened directly on the iPad app. But I've solved the problem by downloading the epub version to Calibre and converting it to mobi, then emailing that to my kindle. A couple of extra steps, but it seems to have worked perfectly.

>19 SylviaC: I went old school after I read your post. I saved the book to my PC and used a USB cable. The book had a .prc file extension which I've never seen before. So my Kindle shows it as a personal document, but it opened without an issue.

24gilroy

>23 clamairy: IS that why it came up screwy? I was wondering how to fix it...

25SylviaC
Nov 6, 2016, 11:17 am

>23 clamairy: Yeah, as far as I could tell with my very limited knowledge, it was the .prc extension that was causing the problem. It wasn't on the list of supported documents in the email from Amazon. I didn't think of using the USB cable. I quickly realized that I would have to use my PC rather than my iPad to get it to my Kindle, though.

26Maddz

.prc is the forerunner of .mobi. It's the old Palm format - I have a lot of ebooks in that format as my first ebook reader was my Palm m500 - sadly missed.

It can be easily converted using Calibre.

Helen S. Wright's wonderful, twisty space opera A Matter of Oaths: http://www.arkessian.com/

Katherine Blake/Dorothy J. Heydt's domestic fantasy The Interior Life: http://www.kithrup.com/~djheydt/

Melisa C. Michaels' parallel-worlds urban fantasy World-Walker (this is a RTF text file so will probably not work on many ereaders without Calibre conversion): https://www.sff.net/people/melisa/downloads.html

The Nexus trilogy by Ramez Naam is currently on sale on the U.S. Amazon site. $1.99 for each book. The books are Nexus, Crux, and Apex.

I haven’t read it myself, so I can’t vouch for it. It was a club read in a group I’m a member of on another site, and I’ve seen some favorable reviews from people I follow. I had it on my eReaderIQ list as something to try if it went on sale.

The Kindle version of The Magic of Recluce by L. E. Modesitt, Jr. is currently $2.99 on the U.S. Amazon site. I decided not to buy it myself, mainly because it’s an 18+ book series that still seems to be ongoing. For those who know nothing about them, they're basically Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes (UK tv police series starring Philip Glenister) meets urban fantasy. So basically a UK version of The Dresden Files except the hero works for The Met not as a PI.

97Maddz
Dec 11, 2016, 4:06 am

>96 catzteach:
Like a lending library stocked out of copyright authors and authors nobody has ever heard of (i.e. new authors). You'll find some mid-list authors too.

I've not bothered because I'd sooner own on the grounds I can download and keep the work safely backed up. (Yes, I know you can back up your Unlimited titles as well, but that's technically piracy.)

Also, I believe there may be a limit to how many titles you can have downloaded at once.

In all honesty, I didn't think it was worth the subscription fee, especially as I have a massive reading backlog on titles I own (or obtained legitimately via Baen - there's only so much Mil SF I can tolerate reading at any one time).

>96 catzteach: Exactly what >97 Maddz: said. Unless you have a bottomless bank account and no shelf space it's not worth it. I get enough freebies and sale books to keep my Kindle well stocked already. I do have Amazon Prime, though. That let's me read several from a selected bunch* at a time and if you own a Kindle you get one of six choices free from the Kindle First selection each month.

*That's through Prime Reading. You can do this without a Kindle.

>100 catzteach: >101 clamairy: There is also the Kindle Owner's Lending Library, (KOLL). Amazon has gotten pretty good at hiding KOLL e-books, (coincidentally, that obfuscation began when they rolled out Kindle Unlimited), but they can be found if you're willing to do a bit of digging. For instance, I recently read Vanishing Point for free using KOLL.

One rather large caveat: KOLL does not work with the Kindle App - only actual Kindle devices.

Like clamairy, I have both Amazon Prime and Netflix streaming...

Amazon Prime is $99.00 per year. Where I live, that's $107.81 after tax is added, which translates to $8.98/month for video streaming, music streaming, prime books, KOLL, and free 2-day shipping on many physical items.

Netflix charges me $9.99 per month for video streaming only. With tax, that adds up to $10.90/month or $130.80 per year.

To my way of thinking, Amazon Prime is, by far, the better bargain. But they don't have all the same content as Netflix. Both together are less than half the monthly cost of my cable TV service.

103clamairy
Dec 12, 2016, 7:12 am

>102 ScoLgo: Yes, the KOLL is a bit of a pain to search through. I always have one on my Kindle. Sadly, sometimes I forget about a KOLL book until I attempt to borrow another and I get a reminder that I have to return the unread one I already have.

I agree that cable is ridiculously over-priced. If it weren't for HBO I'd get rid of it.

Dec 12, 2016, 11:36 am

>100 catzteach: I love Prime. It easily pays for itself in the free shipping alone if you order enough. Amazon also offers Prime Reading now which is a reduced version of Kindle Unlimited that's included in your Prime membership. I think there are couple hundred titles available in total but it's a very nice perk. It does not have the caveat that KOLL has as it can be used with the app.

I meant to post about this the other day when I first saw it mentioned elsewhere, but I got distracted with random madness and forgot…

On the U.S. Amazon site, the Kindle edition of The Dreamblood Duology by N. K. Jemisin is available for pre-order for $6.99. The duology includes The Killing Moon and its sequel The Shadowed Sun.

Since it’s two books and thus about $3.50 per book, and since the paperback version is $12.81, I figure that counts as a deal. It’s being released on 12/20, so I don’t know if the price will go up after the release date, but I imagine it might.

I snagged this one myself since I’ve been wanting to try this author’s work for a while.

>168 Euryale: Thanks for the reminder. I bought that almost a year ago when it was on sale and still haven't read it!

>168 Euryale:, >169 clamairy:

One thing I didn’t realize before reading Trigger Warning is that the last story in the anthology, “Black Dog”, features the main character from American Gods. I was a bit iffy on the rest of the anthology, but that was one of the stories I did enjoy. There's also a fun Sherlock Holmes story in there.

I thought I’d mention it in case it helps anybody decide whether or not to pull the “trigger”. :)

171clamairy
Jan 4, 2017, 8:45 pm

>170 YouKneeK: Is the Holmes story you're referring to 'A Study in Emerald' by any chance? Because that was part of the audio version of Fragile Things. I wonder if there is some overlap.

172YouKneeK
Jan 4, 2017, 8:49 pm

>171 clamairy: I haven't read Fragile Things (although I did read the other American Gods-related short story in that one), but the Holmes story in Trigger Warning is "The Case of Death and Honey".

I should probably turn in my bibliophile card because I can't stand Gaiman's writing.

174clamairy
Edited: Jan 4, 2017, 9:35 pm

>173 gilroy: Which ones have you tried? First one I read was American Gods and I was not impressed at all. But then I read Stardust because I got it for $1 and I absolutely adored it. Since then I've really enjoyed everything else of his I've read or listened to.

175Euryale
Edited: Jan 4, 2017, 9:53 pm

>173 gilroy: No author can be everyone's cup of tea. For me it's Michael Chabon; I keep thinking, "oh that sounds like a good story," but never make it more than a chapter or two.

176sandstone78
Jan 4, 2017, 9:50 pm

I'm not sure whether anyone but me uses Kobo, but they just made some more titles from traditional publishers eligible for their "super points" loyalty program (get a certain amount of points based on each book you buy, redeem them for free books, pay $10 a year to double the points you get per dollar spent).

They seem to mostly or all be series starters, I saw Ancillary Justice, Fortune's Pawn, Priestess of the White, The Magician's Guild, and Fortress in the Eye of Time in the list.

>173 gilroy: It's not just you! Gaiman is one of those popular authors that I feel like I should like and keep trying every so often (short stories, comics, novels, Doctor Who episodes) but have never gotten into. (His calling a collection "Trigger Warning" was such an eyeroll-inducing decision that I may have finally given up trying, though. :)

177Maddz
Jan 5, 2017, 1:28 am

>176 sandstone78:

Superpoints are available on the UK site as well, 200 points per £10, VIP membership £6 per year. Although I have a Kobo, I really use it to sideload ebooks I've had since my Palm m500 days and have no desire to repurchase just to load into various reading app libraries.

178ScoLgo
Jan 5, 2017, 2:50 am

>173 gilroy: You are not an island! ;)

With two exceptions, the handful of Gaiman titles I have read left me feeling rather 'meh'. I think it's because those stories exuded a YA type of sensibility. I am (mostly) an adult but I am no longer young so that type of thing does not always resonate with me.

The two exceptions?
1) I really enjoyed the leather-bound Absolute Sandman compilations, (massive wrist-breakers - but the artwork is gorgeous and the stories are clever mashups of legendary and biblical tales).
2) I thought he wrote a pretty great version of the Snow White fairy tale in the short story, Snow, Glass, Apples.

>174 clamairy: American Gods was my first Gaiman too. I was underwhelmed. Felt like I was reading a 2nd-rate Tim Powers novel. I might have to try Stardust. I liked that movie pretty well!

179gilroy
Jan 5, 2017, 5:42 am

Well, I don't feel as bad. :)

>174 clamairy: My first was anansi boys which left me lost and bewildered for more than half the book. I have picked up American Gods twice, get five pages in and put it down again... Won't touch anything else.

Had a roommate who loved him and purposefully displayed his books next to my presently reading shelf, just to taunt me.

180clamairy
Edited: Jan 5, 2017, 7:51 am

>179 gilroy: The roommate would be enough to turn me off for decades. LOL

>178 ScoLgo: I think he has a tendency to explore a lot of different styles. I would never have thought that American Gods was written by the same author as anything else of his I've read except for the occasional short story.

181majkia
Jan 5, 2017, 7:56 am

>179 gilroy: American Gods was a DNF for me. Boring for me, and found no real interest in the characters. Stardust was okay but I thought the movie was much better than the book!

But then we know I'm weird. I don't like Stephen King either.

182clamairy
Jan 5, 2017, 8:12 am

>181 majkia: You're not weird. Well... not any more than the rest of us, anyway! :o)
I only enjoy some King. Stopped reading him decades ago, but 11/22/63 was recommended to me by so many people I felt I had to give it a shot. I'm glad I did.
